Is Super Mario Brothers A Surrealist Masterpiece?

It’sa me… the unexpected combination of visual elements

We can look at Mario, and his 30+ year series of ultra-beloved games and then also look at surrealist visual art and say…hmmm… these things share some similarities! But what if we go a little deeper? And ask if there are any characteristics that go beyond the purely cosmetic–from history, to context, to impact–that might make Mario more, or a different kind of, surrealist masterpiece? Lets’a go!

  1. Well there also seems to be a connection to fascism in the plot of Mario itself. He fights against a violent and authoritarian ruler in hopes of keeping the current monarch in place. Maybe in a certain way Mario games could be seen as a surrealistic portrayal or war?

  2. I scoffed when I saw this video title, thinking it was a reupload, but I have to give it up- this is a much more thorough and interesting video than the original. Well done!

P.S. The one piece of criticism I would offer about this video is that it ignores the parts of Japanese culture that are still firmly mired in negative traditions of the past, especially xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, and misogyny to name a few.

  3. Didn't Anita Sarkeesian claim that Toadette was the only female toad among the mushroom people even though this is completely false?
