Jemima Kirke – Where Are the Women? | Unlock Art

Girls actress Jemima Kirke (known as Jessa Johansson in the HBO series) addresses the topic of women in art (or the lack them).

She looks at the changing role of female artists in a male dominated art world over the centuries – and how some of them eventually took on the establishment in the 1970s.

So far in this series – part of Tate’s quest to bring art to a wider audience – our video team has collaborated with the likes of Frank Skinner, Alan Cumming and Sally Phillips to bring you crash courses in Performance Art, Pop Art and Shopping for Art.

Other films coming up in the series include one on Surrealism presented by Peter Capaldi, aka Doctor Who!

  1. saw this immediately after reading an article on wendy davis and all the sexist poo-slinging intended to undercut her campaign… it's 2014!  This was so nicely done, but frankly, I'm sad that it's still necessary to be having this conversation.

  2. This doesn't seem like it's the biggest problem that anyone anywhere is facing. I'm sorry it's just you are fighting for women's artistic roles throughout history while there are still women who aren't allowed to drive, vote and live independently.

  3. I love Jemima Kirke and the role she plays on the T.V. series "Girls". But what I love most is that she has taken part in a very real subject as women and art. I am working on a MFA and I can not agree more with this topic. As for the racists/trolls that have their comment below; we need to find a way to creatively paint them out of the picture and move on to a brighter future with women and the arts.

  4. Interesting and enlightening. I always assumed that the vast majority of artists were women, now I know that most galleries instead feature men. Next time i visit a gallery I'll keep an eye out. Nice video, keep up the good work.

  5. …:) I GUARANTEE the ideas for The Ark of the Covenant, Ancient Egyptian Art ETC…came from the mind of a woman to a man 🙂 <3…but men have gotten the credit…like Betsy Ross and the American flag…women's voices have been silenced for far too long…written out of history…UNTIL NOW… #UnLockArt   #EMERGE

  6. Wow! Thanks so much, this is eye opening. I thought women never did paint considering there's no mention of them in history. I thought they were probably never allowed to.

  7. wow… that woman's exhibition that got shut down because of the way she portrayed one man…. it's so ridiculous and just shows these double standards that have been happening for such a long time. Women get portrayed like that all of the time, they are always either oversexualized or told to be good and not sexual. A man gets portrayed in a sexual way ONCE and all hell breaks loose.

  8. Jemima Kirke is beautiful and maybe she is a good painter i don't know but she is a very mediocre actress and this voiceover sounds like Becky reading her paragraph out loud in 9th grade English.

  9. One of my classes last week spent the entire latter half of the session just talking about Lee Miller, and she really is a fascinating person. Apparently her son has been trying to get a script about her life greenlit for years and I really hope such a film is made one day.
