Jersey Joe Walcott's Perfect Timing Explained – Broken Rhythm Footwork & Head Movement Breakdown

The Modern Martial Artist

http://www.modernmartialartist.com/downloads/footwork-wins-fights/ Well before Muhammad Ali astonished spectators by dancing around the ring like a lightweight, there was another heavyweight who’s mastery of footwork seemed to defy gravity. That man was heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott.

Walcott fought with his hands low, content to leave his head a wide open target to some of the heaviest hitters in the history of combat sports.

Crafty and creative, Walcott used a multitude of feints, draws, and rhythm manipulations to set traps and lead opponents into his punches. Recently his distinctive side steps, slips and counters have seen a resurgence among a few gifted modern fighters.

  1. Does anyone have any ideas on how to drill rhythm like this? I know that I’m getting here pretty late, but if anyone would take the time to answer I’d appreciate it.

  2. You broke down this video perfectly. Amazing job. If today's fans don't recognize Jersey Joe as 1 of the greatest they don't know boxing. Great video

  3. You have to add in also that he is setting you up for the shot he is planning to throw about 10 seconds out. He walks you into his trap. Floyd Maywether did a pattern of this in some ways. Ruin a guys gameplan by dictating what you want. You have to be highly skilled to do this successfully .Sugar Ray did this method against Hagler just to survive.

  4. His broken rhythm reminds of the boss Xion from the video game Kingdom Hearts… gods she’s virtually impossible to time and a nightmare to beat. And that was just a video game ! Imagine being in a boxing match against someone with broken rhythm !
