Description: “Louis Valtat was among the most significant members of the Fauvism movement, which originated in France in the early 20th century. He played a substantial part in founding the group, which focused on the use of strong, almost wild coloring, rather the more delicate touches that had characterised the Impressionist tendency from which it had sprung.
Valtat was born in the port city of Dieppe in Normandy, but he went to school near Versailles. His father, a dedicated painter himself, encouraged the young Louis to take an interest in art. The boy was accepted to the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Artes in Paris. As an adult, Valtat suffered from tuberculosis, so divided his time between summers in Paris and winters along the Mediterranean coast. His time spent recuperating there encouraged him to experiment with color and form.
Valtat’s paintings began to be noticed by art critics while he was still in his twenties, with Sur Le Boulevard in 1893 being among the first to gain significant attention. However, it was after the turn of the 20th century that he produced his most famous paintings. These included Les Rochers Rouges dans la Mer in 1903 and, three years later, La Dentelliere. These works saw Valtat established as one of the unofficial leader of the Fauvism movemment, albeit with less lasting fame than his colleague, Henri Matisse.
Valtat’s early works were influenced by the landscape paintings of his father, and His full maturity as a painter arrived when he, together with two contemporaries, including Matisse, exhibited his paintings to considerable acclaim at the Salon d’Automne in Paris in 1905. From then on, Valtat’s paintings showed a blend of the vivid, almost strident colors of pure Fauvism and the slightly gentler, less abstract touches that Valtat had retained from his early experiences with Impressionism.”

peintre fascinant , trop mal connu sauf par les exégètes de l histoire de l art , faisant parti tantôt des fauvistes , tantôt des pointillistes , louis valtat pourrait appartenir a ce genre de peintre inclassable , ou l on devine matisse , Seurat , signac , derain , Vlaminck ,avec des touches de van gogh dans certaines de ces œuvres la couleur de valtat est unique comme ses compositions florales , ces nus féminins , ces paysages si éloignés d un classicisme romantique ,, il est certain que , tels beaucoup de ses contemporains valtat a subi l influence massive des estampes japonisantes qui déferlèrent sur l europe et métamorphosèrent les travaux d un van gogh , d un matisse , d un Lautrec ,, ces forêts aux arbres colorés rappellent le Gauguin de l école de pont aven ,, la composition d un valtat est éclectique , multiple , telle une mosaique intemporelle valtat n aura en rien révolutionné la structure picturale , telle n était pas son but ,, on ressent le plaisir dans mélanges floraux ,,ses paysages provençaux , arbres dénudés comme étreints par la féroce lumière , la chaleur du sud que recherchaient les artistes arrivés du nord , de bretagne ,, certains des personnages féminins font jaillir le mystère de l expressionniste naissant en ce début de 20 éme siècle , le mystère des nus féminins de louis valtat nous interroge sur la volonté intrinsèque du peintre qui s est cantonné entre les rives d un classicisme qu il n a pas transcendé pour des raisons obscures et qui m induiront à pousser mes études sur ce peintre dont les œuvre me semblent trop éparses ,, les peintures que montrent cette belle vidéo auraient mérité un commentaire accompagné d une biographie du peintre ainsi qu une musique en harmonie avec les compositions de l époque ,, valtat classé parmi les fauvistes ou les pointillistes me semblent une erreur et une vision réductrice d un créateur aux influences multiples ,,je ne n y voit pas les aplats féroces d un Vlaminck , d un derain , un Vuillard , un Sérusier , un signac , un Maurice denis , un Sérusier ,
