  1. the main purpose of life is to win. it doesn't matter who is hurt as long as you win. the mind does not care about what is true as long as it wins, it can contradict itself. the human mind work by leader and pack. you are either a leader or the pack. your mind makes a battle to win to get to the top. the ones that does not fight become the pack. what the brain does is trowing dice. it experiments, evaluate and calculate probablilites to improve winning. you see there is a lot to gain from winning and a lot ot loose from failing. instead of a whole mind trowing dice there is millions of cells each trowing one dice each. experiments that increase success increase probablity. thinking is the process of experiment, evaluate and improve. its all it does and only to win. we all want to show of. its the need to win. a winner get lots of food. a looser gets nothing. by the way, your memories are not stored in any partical place in your brain as each cell only holds a probability vaule of some piece of information each. its all these pieces of experiment, evaluate, improvement that creates the whole. many small pieces can solve somthing big together. if one cell have less success another will take over with improvement. i see the same thing in all the people who spend lot of time taking thesis of profession, only to win respect and a audience of pack. that is all they wanted. they are alway only self interested. that is why they complicate everything to make you think that they have some secret that you must have but unfortunalty does not exist. that is just their self serving behavior. any kind of clever intellect that could support alternative logic of solutions are seen as a treat to people who already have a pack. they are afraid your will replace them and instead of support you clever ideas, they reject them in pure self defence. they have a entitlement to protect and defend. they will by no means share power. that will perhaps have produced advancement in technology in the long run but would damage the self serving individual their entitlement. no matter what profession of a dude you talk to, they all try to defend their status. they are all afraid of becoming the pack and will do anything to shut anyones mouth that think he can overtrow entiled experts wisdom. if you are not a fighter yet, your just the pack. only a fighter will win. you don't need a profession to gain staus above people in profession of science. all you need to do is to make enough money to have what ever these professors never ever will have in their life. your status will always be above them since they only earn to serve the state where you on the other hand is free to judge and disregard these low paid clerks of science as less that you and part of the pack and they will respect you and prove to you their just the pack by your entitlement as a rich business man.

  2. It amazes me that when people discuss Artificial Intelligence today rarely do you hear the names of Marvin Minksy, Allen Newell, or Herbert Simon. They are the true fathers of Artificial Intelligence. These where the guys who inspired me to study AI back in the mid to late 1980's as an undergraduate comsci student. With advances in processing performance and software design I've decided to dive back into AI, thirty years later. It is so exciting to now have access to the tools today that limited us in the computer science labs back then.

  3. He had sex with a 17 year old guys… why is everyone freaking out? That's literally legal in most of Europe and in most of the states in the U.S. He also isn't a pedophile. Pedophiles are sexually attracted to children BEFORE puberty. I highly doubt the 17 year old girl was prepubescent.

  4. Love this interview! Finite and Infinite Machines is in my short pile of CS classics, right next to K&R and A Programming Language. "Desert Island" "Save from fire"

  5. All critics are mediocre….especially in sports and academia…this academic clown made his living working for the U.S. government at M.I.T. … A master of verbiage , like Noam Chomsky, they talk on and on and on and….

  10. I'm disheartened by his opinion on today's universities. the graduate who could do great research are inclined to do business instead of science, and getting a tenure has become so depressingly tiresome process that assistant professors are desperate.

  11. 35:00 I find it interesting that several people at MIT contributed to algebraic topology before they concentrated on computer science (Minsky, Hal Abelson).

  12. RIP Marvin.
Rarely have I encountered a more profound thinker. Pound for Pound, who was sharper than Marvin?
He speaks densely. His pauses are just as lucid as his spoken word. Incredible.
I love how he talks and thinks about thinking.
