Alex Meyers
how to tell a story
minimalism
Like I said, I watched Alien for the first time recently, and one thing that struck me was how they never outright explained anything, but if you were just paying attention, it was mostly all there.
I just think movie and game studios really underestimate their audiences. They feel that everything has to be explained and repeated over and over again.
I mean, maybe that’s what sells… I guess.
There’s really an art to telling a story without just… well, telling it.
Using the environment, character’s expressions, things in their house, etc to tell us who they are, what they’re doing, why they are doing it
Sure, it takes talent and a deep understanding of how to tell a story, but I think these types of movies are the ones that tend to stand the test of time.
Anyway, I was on vacation for a few days, so this video is very simple. But, I thought it turned out pretty good. Next week’s will be more… visually ambitious? I guess.

Wow! What agreat video!
The problem with Kingdom Hearts started of simple then they had to explain everything, add stuff, and retcon.
I feel like we became content junkies and want everything explained. It's why I like LOTR books because it's all there and you get to go on a journey but not everyone has minute detail to how they got to where they are.
I really hate movies that assume the audience needs everything explained… scenes that happened before reminded… its irritating… I'm not dumb… get on with your story man !!!!!
Oh wow. I found this channel from the tinder video, but i was looking up videos about minimalism for research for my art essay. I was shocked to see alex. I knew he did video essays but wow, I had no idea what I was missing out on! This is super helpful!
Good video
Wow I absolutely love this video. It was exactly what I needed to hear. I have been an artist and writer all my life but recently I started to feel like there was something missing. I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong until just now. I need to go back to the basics and simplify everything. I hope going back to the basics will make me a better artist. I am extremely grateful for this video. Thank you so much.
The Kid was a master piece in my opinion :D, oh my feels x{
Dude you need to be on Ted Talk
I really love this
That's exactly the reason I hate almost every German movie. They talk too much. It makes me feel like they don't trust the audience to get it on their own. They speak about emotions that could be easily seen through facial expression or even meta-talk about the things they just do right in this moment. (E.g. bank robber with a gun: "Give me the money or I will shoot you down. With this gun in my hand. I'm really serious. Blablabla." – No shit, Sherlock, I thought bringing a gun into a bank is pure fun.) It makes German movies lengthy and takes away all the tension.
Whereas you have to watch some (American) movies or series with great attention – you can happily go and make a sandwich in another room when a German movie streams. You won't miss anything important.
Subbed for your great vids
Love your channel
And I agree. But I also think it has to do with how today’s audiences are so used to hand holding.
They can’t and don’t acknowledge good tv/films like yesteryear. Black Mirror is today’s Twilight Zone, but TZ has a more minimal feel to it. Some endings were open ended and a lot of episodes were slow burns. Younger audiences would never sit down and watch a marathon
it's not a lost art, it's just harder to find these days
indie games….like Hollow Knight?
Journey was such a beautiful game, I love your videos man.
Your right thank you I loved this
So that is why the soulsborne games are so interesting…
Nice video, very watchable. Very helpful too. Thank you. 🙂
Ahhhh… gotta love a great video like this…
I felt that in Bladerunner 2049, minimal dialogue, minimal explanation, hell even minimal music in scenes and I loved it. I haven't seen the original yet but I'm planning to.
How do you not have more subscribers with the amount of effort you put into videos????? This genuinely makes me sad. Great video mate 👌🏽💯
Good writing can save bad art. Good art cannot save bad writing.
