Neurosurgeon says brain does not create consciousness

Larry King

Neurosurgeon Dr. Eben Alexander says that science shows that the brain does not control consciousness, and that there is reason to believe our consciousness continues after death, giving validity to the idea of an afterlife.

  1. Here’s the problem…so look, the idea that consciousness is not created by the brain alone has been backed up well by many people and has many points that make sense…but the thing is, we humans are the most intelligent life forms on this planet. We have 100 billion neurons in our brain AND a minimum of 100 trillion connections in our brain up to a max of 1,000 trillion! Now here’s where my point comes in. Wouldn’t it be logical to assume that since we have that many connections in our brain, that it’s the reason why we’re allowed to think and understand things so complexly than any other life form? To the point where our brain begins to actually question itself? Well I honestly believe in the end that it’s ridiculous to assume that consciousness is not created by the brain alone and my reason to why I think that is, just because our brain is that smart and complex doesn’t just mean that we should literally question our brains normal functions…another thing is, most of the neurological scientists who back up this idea also mention that reality and matter may just be an illusion created by our consciousness ? but come on! Really? What they’re saying is basically if all of planet earth and every human on it were to just die out, then reality as we know It would just disappear to ??‍♂️…no that’s not how it works. The universe doesn’t give a fuck if planet earth and humans disappear, cause the universe is still gonna be here even if we’re gone. Case closed ?

Here’s the problem…so look, the idea that consciousness is not created by the brain alone has been backed up well by many people and has many points that make sense…but the thing is, we humans are the most intelligent life forms on this planet. We have 100 billion neurons in our brain AND a minimum of 100 trillion connections in our brain and up to a max of 1,000 trillion! Now here’s where my point comes in. Wouldn’t it be logical to assume that since we have that many connections in our brain, that it’s the reason why we’re allowed to think and understand things so complexly more fully than any other form of life? The fact that we’ve come to the assumption that consciousness is not created by the brain is because OUR brain is so complex that it begins to question its own self. So therefore in the end I truly believe that our brain really does create consciousness and there’s nothing else to it. Case closed

  3. Our consciousness is nothing more than an illusion created by our brain combined with hormones.

Men: ever wonder why your thoughts change instantaneously to the opposite mind set after ejaculation? Because of hormonal influences by the brain.

  4. Wouldn't this mean that who we are is determined by the filters applied by our brain to consciousness? So if when we die and we expand in consciousness, do we become one with everyone who has died thereby losing characteristics that make each of us unique?

  5. Plato referred to Materialists as 'terrible men' and 'very stubborn and perverse mortals', by the looks of these comments, I see not much has changed.

  6. If you lose all your memories, YOU are dead as you are the sum of your memories, that's a completely different person now. Like a full SD card having everything erased, physically it's the same, but internally it will NEVER be the same. You are both the brain in THAT body, and those memories all together, without both, your don't exist.

  7. Your aware that you exist, but what's the point if you dont have your 5 senses, and no memories, as memories are physical objects called neurons, and there's no way to create more memories as your brain is what creates the neurons… meaning your a blank consciousness…

  8. Whether he's right or not- Why do you people care so much what is the truth? (I mean in a sense that we YET DON'T KNOW and you've already made your conclusions)
Isn't it better to consider every information (Or at least accept it for what it is) and then decide what to do with it rather than reactively rejecting it?

What if reincarnation is real and it's just many of us who haven't experienced that? What if? What if we can turn inwards as some cultures say and realise our true selves (or illusions of that)? I mean- what's the point of denying that if there's no 100% evidence for any side of the story that couldn't be denied?

I love the idea of exploring possibilities and seeing what we don't know and what we can learn. Lets say I don't know that I have brain in my head yet I somehow think. Lets say I'm at that level of knowledge in 2018. Now someone comes up to me, we talk and I say- do you ever notice that you have these thoughts? Like what the hell, how could that be? How could I touch and sense something? It makes no sense.
And that person says- Ohhh, you don't know? We have nervous system, brains and all that, it works in this and that way.
And you're like- No way, that's not true.

And I'm not even continuing the story of that because REGARDLESS OF if there's evidence of proving that theory or not, in any way automatically rejecting it seems like a dumb idea, isn't it?

  9. Im a true atheist in the sense that when we die there is no heaven or hell and that all religions are wrong in everything except that the brain is a safety net for our consciousness so we wont be able to 'see' the whole universe but instead we live in a simulation that lets us perceive the whole specteum to our understanding as were are still an 'infant' soul or consciousness whatever you call it and these are our first steps.
    Ps Im high Xddd

  10. Lol look at all the brainwashed triggered atheists in the comments. Let me explain. Our brain is like the receiver for consciousness but the brain itself does not create consciousness. Our body is sort of like a car and our soul is like the driver. Great way to realize this is through astral projection and having an out of body experience.

  11. you didnt bothert to listen to the whole thing. Think about it. your brain is inside a hard box. it cant see outside can it! everything you know as conscience might not even be what is actually outside. we could be just floating in darkness really

  12. The comment section proves humanity is not ready for this knowledge yet. People are addicted to the illusion and have no interest in the real nature of the soul or of reality (which are the same thing). They will blindly believe anything a scientist says about 11 dimensions, virtual particles, dark matter, etc but believing in the existence of their own soul is just far too much.

  13. I try to have an open mind about anything scientific because us humans have been creating absurdities about life and what lies beyond simply because of ignorance, meaning religious beliefs. Pure fantasy based on our incapability at the time to explain the physical world. So, Dr. Alexander may sound outrageous and ridiculous to many based on their 2018 perspective. What about 100 years from now…or 1,000 years from now? I give the man credit for exploring possibilities that most would not even bother with. And because of people like him, we'll one day have a scientific platform to view what happens after we die and will be common knowledge, not fairy tales from religious books thousands of years ago when science was an unimaginable possibility.

  14. The Almighty and living God created us with body, spirit and soul. You can kill the body but not the soul. Our soul I would call our consciousness

  15. Thank you for your very own continued information, devotion including understanding to support my adventure to progressively more consciously mindful and as a consequence spiritually connected.

  16. What a lot of hogwash! Review the double split experiment. It is NOT the case that an actual observer of the experiment effects the outcome- rather the fact that equipment used to record quantum events effects the outcome. Looking at stuff with human eyes does nothing. Try bending a torch light beam with your Gaze and see how far you get. This guy is a Woo pedlar of the lowest kind- he misrepresents or misunderstands scientific concepts and results and then talks about reincarnation.
And yes he maybe a Dr- but so is Steven Greer…
