UWE Bristol Architecture
Living and working in rural Wales for the past decade, Niall Maxwell has used this context to frame the design approach of his practice, Rural Office for Architecture.
Classifying themselves as ‘regionalists’ the practice has set out to explore the relationship between the vernacular and modern architecture, finding ways of learning from and interpreting the past to make buildings for contemporary purpose.
This talk explores the meaning of regionalism, providing examples of prominent architectural precedents from across the globe, set against more recent output from the UK, before showing the ongoing work of the practice.
The talk concludes with a more detailed appraisal of Caring Wood in Kent, winner of last year’s RIBA House of the Year.
