October Smart Art Box – Dia de los Muertos lady – Sculpy w/ Lachri

This month’s Smart Art Box came full of stuff to sculpt my own Dia de los Muertos lady with firm Sculpy. I painted my lady with my own acrylic paints.
In this box: box of Super Sculpey Firm polymer clay (1lb), Richeson Boxwood Tooks kit, a Pottery took kit, and Creative Mark armature wire.

  1. I love the smart art box and bark box videos, theyre so fun and interesting. It would be really cool to see a sculpture of your dogs, hope you have enough clay for both of them!

  2. Cute! I haven't used mine yet – my daughter (who works with ceramics) wound up confiscating my pottery tools kit, so I may have to go buy some of that if I want to do anything. = She did leave me the pack of wooden sculpting tools, at least. =D Did you make much use of the pottery tools much other than using them to roll/flatten the clay? If so, which one did you use the most or felt you needed the most? I may be able to get by with only buying one or two of the included tools to make one of those, which is why I ask.
I think your's looked great, so don't be so hard on yourself! It was your first time ever! I can only hope to do half as good.
    Thanks for any feedback! =)

  3. That turned out really nice! You've made these Smart Art boxes look so fun and inspirational that I had to subscribe! Can't wait to get my first box 🙂

  4. Good job Lisa, a other video i enjoyed. I know that some artists first make a sculpture and then make a painting of it. Wrinting that makes me wonder if you have ever drawn one of your studio assistants 🙂

  5. You did a día de los muertos thing and I wasn't told!? tsk tsk tsk. Anyway, as always, good to see your videos, some things:

    – As a mexican born and raised, I can tell you that is a pretty good job there. Maybe a little "papel picado" (google it) in the dress could have been awesome.
    – You said you are late but believe it or not, YOU AREN'T so far from the original date señorita, the día de muertos is a 2 day celebration (although día means "day"), november 1st for kids (that passed away) and the second one for the adults. Now, some people (mostly catholics) celebrate the "día de todos los santos" (day of all the saints) in october 31st.
    – I don't know why people from the Smart Art Box company didn't include the "pierde almas", it's vital for the proces of making catrinas and "alebrijes".
    – I'm ALMOST done with the intro of the video, I need to fix some hiccups and for some strange reason the colour changed a lot so I promise to show you when I finish it.
    – google "pan de muertos" and fall in love.
    – ….
    – profit.

  6. Great job! I honestly don't think I would have been bothered to give it a go, but you always do, even though you know it's not really your thing, and you always create something awesome!

  7. Very nice! If you gesso the clay before painting, the color will be more saturated and adhere better. At least in my experience, especially if you aren't using a heavy bodied paint. 🙂 Can't wait to see how your studio assistant comes out. I'm sure your work will be amazing as always!

  8. Lisa, I know what you mean about it looking better before you paint it.I hated the way my acrylic paint came out looking ,too much shine for a piece like this. I fixed the problem by painting a dark umber glaze all over and wiping off most before it dries. This gave it the "aged" look it needed .You can use black or gray glaze for a different effect as well. Hope this tip helps. P.S. Your first piece is amazing!

  9. Love your videos… yet that’s not a day of the muertos lady, it’s called “Catrina” made by Jorge Posadas during the “Porfiriato” time and there’s a whole month of festivities around it where posadas was from, a place called aguascalientes which also has the biggest fair in the world, the city becomes basically an entire party for an entire month reviving millions of tourists…. 🙂
