I think he is saying that consciousness is a phenomenon that is peculiar to humans. Limited to them, in other words. Manifesting through us because of something special about us. I need to listen again, I suppose. Personally I don't know why the universe would pick us humans to manifest consciousness. It seems it needs to exist on every level in some form or other, to be such an important component of 'creation'. Plants follow the sun across the sky, are they not aware of it by definition? They may not be self aware, but they are aware.
