Keynote: What are you doing, really?

Presented by Paul Bamborough, founder, Lightworks

Whether you are writing software, designing a product, starting a company, or simply staring into space, it is forever vital to ask the question “What are you doing really?”

If you don’t keep on asking that, of yourself and everyone around you, there’s no chance of finding the true goal of whatever it is you chose to spend your life on. Everyone and every organisation is doing something really, but most never understand what that is: we are all plagued by the results.

Real purpose is usually very simple, but – as with everything the brain applies its 100 billion neurons to – clarity quickly gets wiped-out by swirling arabesques of irrelevant complexity. Product is replaced by process, function by form, ergonomics by graphic design, and purpose by management. Does this matter to audio developers? Well, yeah, which is why I shall be spending an hour of your and my time discussing some ways it matters, and how to avoid a few of the pitfalls – with special reference to the trail of holes I have fallen into myself (or very occasionally avoided) during decades working on this stuff.

What will I be doing really? Just trying to pass on some useful information.
