Observers can provide betters estimates of state variables when there is noise and low resolution feed back. This is often necessary to compute the higher derivatives of the process variable or position in this case. It also demonstrates how a lack of observer can drastically reduces the quality of control. This video shows the symbolic approach to observers where one can see why the gains are what they are.
