Artistic Culture Series: Digital Lectures Part II
In the introductory lecture of the Course on Methods in Analysis and Interpretation of Art, I recall Arthur Danto, who responding to the crisis effected by the inadequacy of the traditional definitions of art to the contemporary art practice, he has created the contextual theory of art, which allows to frame different art currents since the second half of the 20th century. Focusing on the need of differentiation between an object which is a work of art and an object which is not the work of art, Danto introduced the term, which gained a lot of popularity, also trespassing its understanding by its author: the art world. The art world as such, which its theoretic atmosphere is the direct context of each art piece; in order to recognize the work of art, it is not enough to perceive with our senses some object, but the cultural knowledge is required as well. This knowledge will be shared during this and other courses realized within in Contemporary Literary and Artistic Culture Unit.
