Observations do agree with the predictions of general relativity because over large distances both the changing measure of distance and the changing rate of time contribute to exaggerate the effect of increased speed of things the farther away from the galactic center it is where there is less gravity.

   There is only an appearance of deep time because information from the rest of the universe arrives faster because time runs faster between here and there and the distance isn’t as far as it appears to us to be.

10. The arrow of time is so fundamental and simple, I don’t know why it keeps coming up. The movement of energy creates time, unless that movement happens at infinite speed. If you have universal energy but no movement there is no time. The instant that there is movement of energy time commences. If you take energy and reverse it time continues in the same direction ie time increases. It is less clear that if you have energy but no movement do you have space? That depends on whether all of the energy is co incident and co linear. The passage of time is equal to the movement of energy as a function of the speed of light. If light speed is variable then the passage of time is variable right down to zero, but from zero the passage of time remains in the positive direction, always increases. Even if energy could be caused to revert to a previous form, the time taken to cause this to happen would still be still positive.

15. Jim's great, his teaching videos brilliant. Like Walter Lewin's too, and Gilbert Strang's for math, long live the useful singular value decomposition! The Feynman rustic bromide lectures too, there's just so much good STEM teaching for free on YouTube democratizing science, one wonders if expensive universities out of the reach of some very bright students without financial means, might reconsider their billionaire patron and legacy business models?

16. Hello Jim and Brian, a good interview, and it is good when you say you enjoy passing on your knowledge to people.
    However, you have both said in the past that there are things that at the present time, you have no idea what thy are, such as ' Dark Matter '. ' Dark Energy ' and ' Gravity '.
    It is said that we may need new science to explain these, yet when someone offers a new hypothesis to you, you will not reply. Some times it takes someone who has not followed the same academic path to see an answer to a question, that can then be scrutinized by people like yourselves.
    Yes you may get idiotic ideas put forward, but then look at some of the models that are circulating within the academic world. Anyone, no matter what level of education they have can think of a good idea. The problem with QM and cosmology is, it is wholely dominated by over complicated mathematical equations, that are manipulated to fit the model being proposed, at the expense of Logic.

    I believe that any model should in the first instent, be explained logically. I have in the past tried to send you both a logical hypothesis that offers an alternative to the standard model, that can answer most of the outstanding questions, including those I have quoted, that will also accord with classical physics. I would be happy to send you a copy of my latest draft ( which was inspired by a Royal institution lecture by you Jim on QM) if you are interested. Just send me an email so I can attach a copy to a reply.

    I am quite happy to be proven wrong, and you could even make me look a complete idiot on one of these videos. As a 74 year old successful inventor, with Patents granted, with a background in both mechanical and electrical engineering, and 11 years in the technical side of ' British Telecom ', as a technical testing engineer troubleshooting, I am not a nutcase or a student trying to further my career. 20. I have a couple of questions.
    (1) If we don’t have a simple or fundamental/single definition for the “scientific method” – does this mean we are not communicating very well, or is the problem with the concept itself? Is it possible we don’t yet have a firm definition, one that is unlikely to change anytime soon?
    (2) Context is everything. Saying that scientists must follow the data and be open to changing their minds when the data changes: what really is good or truly valid scientific data? Where do we specifically draw the line between good science and bad science? How many experiments or data is really necessary to have true confidence in an explanation? Perhaps said another way – should we be putting a statistical likelihood (value or statement) on all scientific claims?

    Would infinite time be completely different to what we normally experience as time ~ Our " normal time " always seems to be running out ~ Where as infinite time would never run out !

22. He is a superb presenter but you should ask him a simple question “what is a woman?” and take a long look at his tweets regarding the vaccine. It’s a fascinating view into the machinations of his peculiar thought processes and certain weaknesses in the way he supposedly uses the scientific method. Sort of science to suit the occasion. Although having said all this I adore his programmes. He is a great mind but appears pandering when it comes to making a living. Just wish he would stick to the facts not just when it’s suits his income or ego.
    I can highly recommend the documentary “Science and Islam” it’s superb, personal and illuminating.
