This is how people who are bent on doing what they want speak. They say to themselves things like this when they know their actions are going to have an effect on people and they are trying not to think too much about it.
I believe what Sam Altman just said here is what he tells himself (or has been told to tell himself by his therapist) to combat the backlash. He is trying to drown the thought of the effect of what he and his team are creating on people and focus on his goal. He literally just spoke loud out what he tells his conscience.

by 'melt down and freakdown' he means global social and political upheaval, and by "go on with their lives" he means that he and a cabal of tech moguls will accend to teh global elite, and will fail to provide care or safety margins for billions of people. The issue is that capitalism and greed will ensure that people offload people from their businesses, and it will happen so quickly that governments will never respond in time to care for them or pass universal wage acts (which, even if they tried, would be shut down, as men like him will pay millions to convince people via the media and the algorithms that they design, that it is not in their interest – and many will fall hook line and sinker, largely because of greed, after they convince them that such laws will take from them).
