What happens in your brain when you watch a red sunset or stub your toe? Science is beginning to understand the basis of consciousness, which in part comes from organized tissues in mammals’ brains.

In this Science Café, Dr. Christof Koch of the Allen Institute for Brain Science explores what is known about the neurobiology of consciousness, the limits to our knowledge, and current experiments to discover the nerves and other biological components that make us conscious.

  1. oh yes it does… explain active and perceptive conciousness during out-of-body-experiences, during an operation in which, due to anaesthesia, only a very low brain activity can be measured, if the conciousness is not independent of the brain.

  2. Consciousness is an epiphenomenon of the brain. Consciousness supervenes upon brain activity. If you suspend brain activity, you suspend consciousness. Consciousness does not exist independent of the brain. Cheers.
