Can be semantic role of a word different from sentence to sentence or its meaning is the same in all sentences?

What is the difference between agent and theme? Please explain it with an example.
Was it Michel Bréal(founder of semantics) who came up with the names of semantic roles? As in are they translated directly from French? Agent, theme etc sounds a little weird for English. 🙂
