Thanks! I'm writing a hefty paper on Ferdinand de Saussure and this helped. What do you think about his wave theory of language change?
I'm primarily writing my paper on this subject and I'm fascinated by his distinction between intercourse and regionalism. Those two forces (he says) account for all language change, a pull away from how one speaks now and a pull towards how one speaks now. Do you think those two forces are the only causal relations at work in his theory?
