   Our sex drive is a powerful force, and sex is good for your health. As is human touch. So can you really judge those who are deprived of all of this, for trying to find a better substitute than their hands or something found in the produce section of a store?

39. I understand the jokes, and in ways it is funny. But last year I took a course 'Robot Law' where once we discussed for an hour the implementations, the possibly negative and possibly positive effects of sex robots. Sex robots will become better, more affordable and more people (mostly men) will buy them and are buying them. A possible positive can be that a social anxious man can become more comfortable with women in real life by practising with a robot. This will be better if it is programmed to act more human. In ways, it then is not a sex robot but therapeutic. A possible negative can be that men will treat more women more like objects and like they have no free will or mind because they have a robot at home that they regard so much as 'real' that they cannot separate the two. And if sex robots get programmed more humanly to also not want sex when the human is mean to them, it can have two very different effects; the man (men buy the majority so let's say man) reacting empathic and learning to understand what is acceptable behaviour how to treat other people, or the man pushing through and having sex with the robot anyway, maybe with the justification 'she is not real', therefore learning more and more to ignore the 'no'. Basically, it is a very interesting field in Artificial Intelligence. When sex robots act and talk more human, either realistic human behaviour of fantasy-like, anthropomorphism (regarding non-living objects as living/human) is certain. The question is, will it have positive or negative effects and how much can that be influenced by specific programming? Can we use it re-habiliate, essentially reprogram, sexual predators? Can (controversially) child versions be used to keep pedophiles of the street? Or will that incentivise them to go after the real thing? And can it isolate humans more, because the robots do whatever they say them do, and human contact is much more complicated in comparison?

    To sum up, yes the idea appears funny, but the field will become bigger and is very interesting, and should be researched largely to understand the human psychological effects.
