  1. I’m glad I listened to Jordan Peterson and Sam Harris in Portland before this “discussion”. At least it was an intelligent back-n-forth. This?…damn, a waste of time, listening to a dick licking, fudge packing faggot trash talk Christians and America in general and laughing at his own words, as if he’s hilarious. He seems to think he’s the intellectual equal of Pinker too. Pinker offers nothing at all here other than the same bull shit as other leftist, redistributive SJW’s, just as clueless as to the truth of human nature. Why will ANYONE voluntarily work hard for ANYTHING, if they are “entitled” to “their fair share”? This dip-shit “interviewer” didn’t likely get his job BECAUSE of what he knows…he got it because of who he blows. I was curious what I’d think of Pinker, have heard him referenced elsewhere but from this, shit, not anything more than the typical community college “professor”, spouting his leftist drivel and pretending he’s a true intellectual giant. I got NONE of that from this. I’ll check out his discussion with Peterson, maybe he’ll have a better showing there, at least he’ll get to participate in a conversation with a true deep thinker, this dumb ass even trash talked Peterson, tried to pigeon-hole him as a right wing nut-job. Good grief, shallow self indulgent fuck, I did learn never to waste my time again if he’s part of the video.

  2. Good discussion. But Pinker is utterly wrong on Trumpism. Notice he gave no example of Trumpism being anti-enlightenment. And if he expects us see his definition of anti-enlightenment as the example then he's describing today's left. Trump is about laws over men; reason over feelings, individuals over creeds, race, etc.

It's a shame intellects such as Pinker and Sam Harris abandon critical thinking when discussion Trump. They just do not get it.

  3. one thing about happiness studies…these days the tendency to project a 'happy me' is quite strong – think of fakebook etc. so i doubt people are genuinely truthful or even aware enough to answer clearly, think it's harder these days esp. for younger people to be critical/honest about this… also study's show that people don't tend to tell the truth about how much alcohol they drink (even if they remember :)… so : great talk but not convinced about the happiness/depression topic. Another thing: it's better to listen with an open mind than to judge too quickly. For instance about mr. Peterson. Also: listening (interested and as open minded as possible) to stuff or people who challenge your views is a good way to stay healthy. As Zappa said: the mind is like a parachute, it only works if it is open. I think Peterson is addressing some stuff brilliantly and has a great mind, as do Mr. Fry, Pinker, Harari, or whatever. I love to be informed regardless of stigma's (he's left, right, or otherwise), Read and listen to all sorts of thinkers, challenge your 'beliefs' etc. B well, h

  4. In sep 2018, having seen that amazing tour de force at the Shaw Festival in Canada that Steven Fry lives through magnificently, this was in retrospect, an unfettered and brilliant discussion unhampered by the specter of Jordan Peterson. And all the more valuable for all that entails.

  5. Fry: ''It's impossible not for science to look at everything.'' – NO, that's exactly the point, science can only look at narrow fields. Can it look at EVERY narrow field? Yes. But it NEVER looks at everything.

  6. Pinker is a very decent, intelligent man, but I find his optimism a bit over the top and himself a kind of Doctor Pangloss, with his claim that we live in the best of all possible worlds, or at least the best one to date. He rattles off statistics that seem calculated to make us feel that our anxieties, depressions and sense of iinjustice are totally groundless. And yet note that he says not a word about the threats of nuclear and ecological apocalypse, the madmen and idiots that are currently ruling the planet, and the unbridled destructive and in the end self-destructive greed of our economic system, etc. He seems to see progress as something inexorably linear, but I see it as something extremely fragile, subject to cyclical breakdowns, many of which are right in front of our eyes, the fact, to name just one, that our children and grandchildren will probably live in some Mad Max inferno. Nevertheless, he speaks extremely well, which these days is a rarity and always a pleasure.

  7. This is needs to be taught in our schools: How to ask questions, how to answer a question, how to listen, how to disseminate knowledge in a way which assumes the listener is not totally stupid, etc. Just absolutely brilliant stuff. Thank you all who made it possible for me to watch this.

  8. Tragic to see how many can be fooled by this con artist of statistics. I wonder if his perspective would be the same if he had been poor when a child or close to any kind of real suffering. He is the scholarly equivalent of a "beauty pageant participant". I hate to have wasted 1:18:48 of my life listening to these two court jesters.

  9. Before I start watching this: does Fry allow Pinker to speak, does he give him space, or is he taking up time to present his own opinion too much? I like Fry, but like DeGrasse Tyson, he sometimes can't get past himself when he's interviewing others.

  10. I saw it and liked it until around 29:15 when the idiot try to tell us that it is a "civil" war in Syria.

A american attack on Syria is NOT a civil war!
Even if they use mercenaries(ISIS) to act as local "rebels"…

    American shithole!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Left leaning intellectuals love to construe the USA as laggard:a country which pioneered the Internet, ecommerce, online education, television, the latest medicine and treatments, the breeding and blossiming ground for most of the science Nobel laureats,to name a few phenomenon which are the currency for the world's enlightenment and upliftment. If only the laggards would give up their guns, and embrace full on socialism: that is progress to them.

  12. Can you measure the crime rate by the culprits’ ethnicity if you do not know the culprit? Aren’t rates by ethnic group calculated by convictions? Convictions can involve racism.
