Rajiv Malhotra Official
This was recorded in the summer of 2018 while I was traveling to India. Parth Parihar, a PhD student at Princeton University and President of Hindu Students Council, led the discussions in our Princeton studio in my absence. I was able to interject only briefly by Skype. The conversation covered many theories and speculations on the potential of artificial intelligence, and how far it can advance relative to human consciousness. This is the first part of a multi-part series.

Atma=Soul is a matter , said by logicians- In Nyaya sastra there are 9 Dravyas- pruthvi-ap-tejo-vyaayu-akaasa-kaala-dik- atma -manas=total=9; Akasa means eather
No-I would not agree with you as Consciousness is not meterial, because Saiva Agamas are clearly mentioned as punya and papa also a Dravya=Meterial it has some properties, so it can be purified with some rituals-.
When consciousness itself is trying to find an answer, artificial consciousness is not followed. Nice talk.
Thanks Subhash Kak for this wonderful discussion. Have one doubt. Could you please explain what was being referred to when you said "… you're not allowed to have some thoughts. Certain kind of thoughts have already been BANISHED…" Could not get that clearly. Please help understand better. Thanks !
Also RM had an interview with niti aayog head.
Niti head said about meditation and economy. He meant well.
But understand that spiritual progress and material/economic progress go hand in hand.
Bhutan is doing green all over and has spiritual happiness but what if someone comes with a sword. What then? The above reply holds true.
And if India is to be global guru then it should teach to this earth how to attain either of them in a most exclusivistic way.
This devotee of Yoga Narasimha Swamy had said about holding the Truth from BOTH sides. The explanation above is what he meant by them.
This is the solution for Islam and Christianity. Islamic society is metaphysical extreme and Christian society at large is material extreme contemporarily.
(Note: not all but most. There are materially prosperous Muslims and dogmatic christians also)
Hence Islam has much problem towards modernity and Christians can't stand the jihadist mindset.
But it is only by Aryas who see material progress and spiritual progress as hand in hand can this problem be rectified and balance be brought on earth. The power of Aryas right now is from Veera Bhoga Vasantha Raaya. He can do this.
Dont think that materialism is dark and transcendence is light. A well meaning material endeavor done under the ambit of dharma which satisfies any and every purusharthas will actually and eventually lead to moksha.
Whereas false transcendence or false spiritual practices or even false religious practices will lead to harm.
The subject of computers acquiring consciousness is balderdash !
Will computers, if they become conscious, be able to mediate ?? Do they they need peace ? Will they start searching for the truth?
"In vedanta consciousness is singular…it's like the same outer Sun reflected in a Million different pots of water in all it's glory…in a same way consciousness which gets reflected through the brains which is like the pot of water in all the individual / sentient beings…"
This was a real good talk. Thank you Trinityfoundation for this topic. Hope we will see many more such interactions.
I'm sorry who was representing the Buddhists at that conference? Because that is a total misunderstanding of Sunyata.
2 laser beams crossing produce on passing through holes presents two “realities”: 1 as perceived by our senses and 2 on a screen: See Michael Tabot’s “The Holographic Universe”. The objective and the subjective are both
As Dante said How will you doubt the doubter. All this discussion is not physics, music is not sound waves and conductors n “brain”.
We should discard this word consciousness….it is senseless. I have no idea what is being referred to when it is punched into a sentence.
Physics and Meta physics
(Sunyata) Emptiness to full ness, zero to infinite, dark and into light and vis versa atma and paramatma are fantastic studies. Modern Saints hat off to you. Continue and enlighten us. Thank you.
It was great hear discussion the Mathematician Ramanujan and direct line to Devi. This is recent recorded event. It would be great RM could interview the devotees of Sai Baba and explain the miracles attributed to Baba. Sai Baba is also a recent phenomenon and many of the devotees who interacted with him are still alive to talk about their experiences.
Humans create Machines to be used for their purpose, compute, analyse, play, record and replay, drive cars, create robots to do things, perfectly, faster, and do hazard things that humans would rather not , etc…….. Humans can energise the AI but never can give life without which consciousness cannot be contained. Let us for a minute turn our focus on humans and why we were created. There are many views on it and the most popular view is that we were created to serve the creator and his(her- their) purpose. If that were the case, why create such a diversity of life forms and humans so many mind sets and freedom to choose? And is serving is only the motive why creator us as the creator can manifest anything by his intention alone? Is it similar to the fact that we can only create computer but have limited control what purposes it will be put to use? If we can agree on what purpose the life forms and humans were created, then we can perhaps agree on whether computers might become conscious or not. And in my definition consciousness is not just thoughts, facts, images and sounds, it includes, feelings, emotions, desires, ideas, choice etc. NO, right now I cannot imagine that AI will become a living thing, however we are good in converting living things into AI and robots and perhaps we will perfect this art that might result in our own ultimate destruction (Unless our maker decides to intervene).
Good video and nice concepts being discussed. One thing that did not appear in the discussion is that consciousness is for the jeeva within every living thing in this planet bacteria till human beings…machines and computers cannot and does not have a jeeva into that….once the jeeva becomes conscious…it tries to move into the liberation path at some.point and stops doing the materialistic world's activities..if computer or machine stops to do the intended task then what is the point in building such a machine or computer which does not support the current day thought of machines taking over human work…
Wonderful 👌👌
There are various levels of consciousness..I think ai can become conscious …In vedic age in mahabharat all these astras does look similar to this concept of ai..
Good initiative by rajiv malhotra g..More.& more debates like these should be there on grand scale & should be common sight in gurukuls.
two great ppl !!
I cannot believe this is the first time Subhash Kak has featured in your channel. How come so late Rajivji?
what is the hindi/ sanskrit word for consciousness , anyone ?
Ummm…. I don't think that we can equate self awareness with consciousness. At the most fundamental level, a conscious entity is someone who have the ability to experience. It doesn't matter if that entity is able to recognize its own awareness or not. So I think every self aware entity is conscious but not every conscious being is self aware.
A natural question to ask is when does consciousness arise in humans? Are sperms and ovum individually conscious? Is the fetus conscious?
wow…such a sea of knowledge. Thanks.
I strongly believe that Start of Quantum theory is seeded by Advaita philosophy introduced Swami Vivekanand in 1893 in USA. Essential idea that Matter and Energy are same and just manifestation of reality. This Idea cannot be originally conceived in mind influence by Western philosophy. Idea of Advaita was turned into Atom bomb by western world. western quest to control others is the issue that they cannot bring evolution of human. Material progress is not evolution , it is only used to control others. Study of Consciousness by western people should not be supported by Vedic scholar because even if they succeed 5 % , then it will end of Freedom on humans. Our scriptures clearly states that higher knowledge should be given to person who will use it for evolution of Mankind. When Higher knowledge given to wicked person like Ashwathanma , he committed worst crime ever done in humanity. It can be compared with Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Totally disagree with Statement that we are also Machine. if we devoid ourself from Bhakti then only someone can reach this conclusion.
It was really awesome discussion. I am sure AI can never gain consciousness but what is truely questionable is " are we really acting living working like a concious being". And the answer is No and thats where Machines AI is better and will surely takeover. Hari om.
Now that we know that even plants have intelligence and awareness and that human perception of meta intelligence through mind( primarily lingual),also that different colors in sun rays influence human mood, do you think further developments in Opto- computing could make a breakthrough in establishing alternative ways of enhancing understanding of super intelligence ?
Their is one more view i.e. the conscious is nothing more but information about how to process information. And every single string or partical posses that quality or गुणः at least that's the view I am stuck with.
Just like nobody tells how a child should feel nobody tells a photon what it should do when it hits a material.
We should consider that consciousness requires being alive. If the brain evolved, why not consciousness? For AI to be conscious, would it not first have to be alive? What is it about the simplest organism that makes a piece of matter meaningful, as food for example, that evolves to form the complex environment known to humans? The human brain is part of an organism, not a mechanism.
The reflections of the sun analogy is used by Adi Shankara. Very fundamental to vedic discourses. While it is different to western thought, it was normal part of learning of advaitha.
Excellent 🙏🕉🚩
There is another view, and also some data, which suggests that consciousness might be independent of the matter; just as light is independent of eye. Matter or eye can be formed into instrument for perceiving matter and eye. Dean Radin's global consciousness project is one such project, in which random number generators have been observed to fluctuate in a definite pattern prior to any event of global significance, like Tsunami etc. This effect, many parapsychologists claim is similar to what they have observed in lab, whenever subjects are showed pictures with sufficient mental provocation subliminally, skin resistance changes and other physiological changes occur 'BEFORE' even the pictures are flashed.
Rajiv sir….we want to see and listen to you😁
Please make a video on destiny, and how it's works? Or is there anything in real like Destiny?🤔Or It is human created thing.?
Well, the prana is very important because it carry the consciousness inside the body. The subtle body also is important.
He spoke just of gross body and consciousness, and forget all this.
So for a machine to become conscious, it needs prana and a subtle body also and it will be no more a machine.
Great discussion!
Dear Rajiv Ji, please invite Acharya Agnivrat Naishthik(Vaidic Scientist) on your show.
He is a goto person to understand vedic science. he have done 12yrs of research on vedas and other hindu scripts to unfold secret of the universe. we all should support his work.

youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVMXPHR16bvkkUYRBz2IGHA
Rajivji namaste there is a guy who says snaskrit is not an old language and puranas are deciful and Mahabharata and Ramayana never happened ,his name is rajendra singh
Fear of rise of machines is a legitimate one, I think. It is apt to mention Yuval Harari's take on this. He believes that the "economic utility" of ordinary humans (elite 20% may still thrive alongside the machines for some time), billions of them, would go to zero! If all physical labor and most of the intellectual (analytical/quantitative) work can be outsourced to the machines then what is left? Even doctors may be redundant if diagnostics, surgeries can be done by machines. If even wars are fought by robots, then humans lose that last connection with humanity itself–valor & sacrifice! At this point, any rational human being would question this mankind's penchant to create an artificial force that could result in the destruction of the very species, Homo Sapiens! Thing is, most humans will be reduced to zombie state with zero agency! The next Kalidasa or Mozart or Kishore Kumar could be a robot!
The computer can never have consciousness, but may emulate like a human brain or may be connected to Human mind , but a machine can never have its own consciousness.
You see the problem lies in the understanding and explanation of the Consciousness.
A Computer scientist may believe the idea of consciousness is mere a product of brain.
2nd Group of computer scientist may say No its not part of brain its just a experience, experienced by the brain so t6o solved this problem lets relate this with human brain .
Take my word science is working more towards Trans-humanism then AI with consciousness and this are entirely different things .
You see the best definition of Consciousness is always in sanatani and the same idea is copied by other please ask them reference and Context .
Thanks Rajivji for this great conversation. AI today seems largely satisfied with using AI to solve commercial problems.
A great conversation! Thanks for the efforts. However- I am still not convinced about this particular point, that consciousness exists beyond the material- I still tend to believe in the materialistic emergent interpretation of consciousness. Though I understand the value of the Vedantic perspective in a lot of other things.
Maybe I need to read up more about this? Can you please suggest some readings for this specific point?
I found this really interesting because I am a practicing Hindu and a Machine Learning researcher.
Sir , is there will be a limit of AI capability like humans have !!
wonderful. grateful.
Can't thank you enough for this. Will save this to come back again and again. Such an enlightening discussion. Love and respect.
Excellent episode. Thank you @RajivMalhotra ji for an insightful discussion.
In a way the machines (existing, even non-aware by definition) already do accumulate Karma.
For example, the computers or software systems that are programmed to behave based on their past history do get their future actions (operations) influenced by their (karmic) memory. If we are to define the (active) life of a machine as life between a startup and shutdown, then this karma (consequences of past actions) influencing karma (current actions given the initial conditions of past actions) cycle also passes between multiple lives. The memory of past karma is left in inanimate form between lives of the machine etched into some hardware memory system.
Listening to Sri Subhash Kak, made me wonder if this whole science is "western pursuit" of Vedanta using Greek/Latin/English words in the current cycle. Yes, there is what we call technology that differentiate Hindu Vedanta and modern science. But isn't a traditional farmer's farming process is also a science itself, even if it may not be as efficient (and polluting) as the modern farming methods? Sri Subhash Kak sounded to me as if he is translating Upanishadic knowledge into modern science for the Hindu-illiterates (people who aren't aware of Santana Hindu Dharma).
Thanks
