Hi, I'm from Eritrea and speak Tigrinya, and I know that The name Yisrael/Israel don't have a translation in the bible, but some scholars think it means, the one that wrestle with God.
In Tigringa the word Yisrael means Let him be planted/fruitful God. Yi Sra EL = Let him be planted/fruitful God.
Bible vers: Genesis 35:10-11: And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Yisrael shall be thy name: and he called his name Yisrael. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins. The Tigrinya language is a semitic language and I think that's the reason why we have a meaning to the Name Yisrael.
And they've been fighting God ever since.
Does El not equal Enlil?
The name of our Elohim is YAHUAH not 'the l*rd'. Don't break the 3rd order/direction/command.
So that technically means that Israel is named after somebody.
Thanks ! I found ! Shalom !
Yes!!! 😁🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
AMEN
I love your commentary it was very informative. Yisrael I think means he turns the head of El or God. Yod, when it is prefix to a verb it means he. Alif Lamid or Al. translated means god.sar as far as I know means Prince like SAR Shalom or ruler. And the ancient Hebrew SAR is a picture. It means turns and head as in he turns the head of God. That's about as far as I can go with it. Israel seems to have multiple meanings. Shalom
Very enlightening. Are there any sources I can read up on a more detailed etymology? I would love to dive in deeper.
Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”
But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blesseda him there.
So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
Genesis :29,30
Music is haram sahih bukhari 5590
So Israel is originally a person not a place
Abraham, Isaac & Jacob were family. Abraham was told by Adonai to get out his fathers land, land of Ur. How is Jacob whose a father is Isaac whose father is Abraham whose father is from the land of Ur become Jews?
