Richard Widmark is very convincing as an over Zealot Miltary commander. Martin Balsam is also great as an over eager and rational character who means well, but is wasting his time with Finlander. A definite Personality conflict here.
Those were tense days back then. I don't think the Russian people as a whole were really up to A War with us. It all comes down to the Governments who think they know what's best for their people.

Maniacal commander? Whoever captioned this has no idea about the level of brinksmanship and tension during the worst days of the Cold War. Naval commanders were assigned incredible responsibilities and were given the commensurate authority to carry out those responsibilities. Military commands aren't for the weak.
