Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence—the body keeps the score. That’s how Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s leading experts on developmental trauma, explains how our long-term health and happiness can be compromised by prior exposure to violence, emotional abuse, and other forms of traumatic stress. In his new book, Dr. van der Kolk explores how innovative treatments—ranging from meditation and neurofeedback to yoga, sports, and drama—offer new paths to healing and wellness. A psychiatrist and author of multiple books, his work and perspectives have been featured in The New York Times, on National Public Radio, and in many other media outlets.

I picked this book up a year ago after a major clinical event that I still suffer from. Haven't read much of it but I found it very comforting considering nobody believes my physical body sensations, they all think I'm lying.

eastern spiritual tradition can be used to bypass emotions and healing of trauma quite easily, by stating that the spirit is perfect and the body and it's emotions are illusory it hasn't actually created a space for healing trauma but simply bypassing it in many ways. Unless you put the intention there to heal, you can easily use any Eastern practice such as yoga or meditation as a means of bypassing healing. calming the body is great but calming it doesn't necessarily heal it.
christianity is for love. the other is for power and pushdown – what should the world be built on?
Fabulous. Loves this video. Very educational.

the anterior cingulate eh!
Now we are murdering each other, instead of other countries!
This was mind blowing…. Have spent almost a decade to understand what was wrong with me.
This is one of the most profound talks on trauma I’ve heard to date. Thank you for sharing.
The trauma of being seperated from parents in a traumatic way and held in abusive conditions could become like another 2003: attacking the "wrong" people for the problems the nation is experiencing. The US's response to 2008 and other economic problems caused by the elite is sickening. Wake up Americans, stop the trauma and its after effects before it affects more than just the people being abused.
A transcript would be very helpful for deaf and hear-disabled people. Please?
Levine worked at a well known mind control facility called esalen……..make sure you know who you are following. Esalen practiced MK ULTRA mind control, trauma and splitting the personality. they cleverly turned it into a yoga retreat hiding the traces of what they did. where do you think Levine got all this ground breaking trauma reversal…..wake up
What about brain trauma from beat up then hit by a car, bad childhood
This is amazing. If I understood correctly, when a person experienced trauma their prefrontal cortex and Broca’s area is offline. Because the prefrontal cortex is offline a person doesn’t have self awareness??
may be ur neck bones been messy dislocate caused by excessive neck muscle movement during nervous confusion or hit by someone on head which afterward pull ur head muscle oddly and turn into continuous state of brain cramp (unaware by ppl bcuz its constant until brain relax being feel partly when fix happen by luck), unstable mood indirectly. emotions or something also somehow trap between cramped part of brain which will be release partly as part of neck bone being fix normal. so try find atlas correction master or self play muscle twist by problematic bone as axis which take hundreds attempt or close to thousand to fully relocate from my exp
Your so right the body never forgets or the brain , I don’t know why it’s a concept
What does he mean he was better when he returned to Boston? He hadn't said he was unwell.
At about 32 min in he talks about the body's sense of "I'm here, I'm going somewhere and I know where I am going" falling apart, "instinct of purpose" per Pavlov disrupted by trauma. Such a great observation he makes of the relative gait of the veteran.
Victim mindset!! That pisses me off because part of the problem with early childhood COMPLEX trauma is that one doesn't develop social skills and then one isolated and DO MAKE YOU A VICTIM not only of ALIENATION but of opportunists who prey on the vulnerable. Learning to protect oneself is a skill set and people need modeling and mentors and stable safe housing to try to regain losses of early childhood complex trauma especially if they are old which is sometimes when trauma comes back and cripples people who had survived through most of adulthood.
One this he misses, so far 30 min in, is that sometimes people are in the moment feeling fear NOT just because or only because of the memory of the original trauma but when trauma occurs in early childhood and is continuous it means that the sufferer doesn't get to develop skills, social skills and hobbies etc. and they have a new CURRENT reason for fear; they are so messed up and don't have the conditions in which to now as adults develop those skills.
🙁 I wish it has subtitles or captions for the deaf.
Now that #PresidentTrump has let us know that the U.S. has a Satanic Deep State at war with its own people as well as other countries who have their own Deep State that do the same, maybe people will unite and fight against this established corruption in EVERY country. Jerusalem as well as the U.K. as well as Australia, as well as Canada, as well as China, as well as Iran, the list goes on and on……The Deep State funds the drug companies to dumb down countries to easier control its people. That's their plan………….Indian people treat their own people in an incredibly racist manner and I don't agree that they have more to teach us. They refuse to help their poor who usually have the darkest skin. It is decided for you at BIRTH that if you were born in the Slave Class (Untouchable/ Dalits) you will NEVER work your way out of it. They let these people DIE in the streets and never offer ANY Social Welfare. Disgusting way to treat others. They can sit on their cloud and meditate the guilt right out of themselves.
Well, the yogis arent "uneducated stupid people" their education is ancient, but yogis are ancient science. They arent stupid either.
