The Collectors: Surrealism and modern art in Egypt

Community Jameel

May Moein Zeid and Adel Youssry Khedr are collectors of modern art, especially from Alexandria in Egypt, where they live. Produced for the exhibition ‘Monaco-Alexandria: the grand detour: World-capitals and cosmopolitan Surrealism’ , this film explores what inspired May and Adel to build their collection, and how they hope the works of art can inform understanding.

‘Monaco-Alexandria’ was an exhibition of modern art from Alexandria – including works never before shown outside Egypt – that ran from December 17, 2021 to May 2, 2022 at the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco. The exhibition explored cultural dialogue across the Mediterranean in the early twentieth century and was curated by Morad Montazami and Madeleine de Colnet for Zamân Books & Curating.

The exhibition publication, and the public and education programme, were produced with the participation of Community Jameel and the support of the Alexis and Anne-Marie Habib Foundation.
