Models of language evolution tend to represent languages as discrete, monolithic unchanging entities. I argue that this isn’t a valid way to look at the evolution of languages. On the way: how to use linguistics to study flags, why alchohol affects morphology and why linguistic diversity predicts the number of traffic accidents in a country.
