Police sirens change pitch when going past us due to the Doppler effect. This phenomenon can also be used to measure speeds, even of faraway objects, like stars.

RV Jones gave the 1981 Christmas Lectures “From Magna Carta to Microchip” which explores what measurement is, the principles by which measurements can be made, and why their applications have been of so much importance in the advance of science and in the development of technology
In his fourth lecture, RV Jones takes things to the extreme, and measures things that are very large or very far away.

Who dislike an educational and also quite entertaining 2 minute video like this?
…Freaks.
Science is awesome! This demo is super intuitive.
That was very good. 🙂
well presented for public and the young. As science for scientist it is incomplete and expansion conclusion is wrong. Ignorance of structure of light and it’s interaction with gravity led to such conclusion and ever since the scientist have been chasing their tails. In my previous comment to the scientist and here on internet, I have pointed out, there is no expansion. There is no acceleration in expansion or accelerated acceleration. As expected more accurate their measurement more discrepancies in measurements which they fudge explaining. As result there was no big bang, black hole, dark energy etc. Already number of Oscar / noble has been awarded for their ignorant and there will be more because they do not know the reasons and they have been too stupid and self important to ask officially past 43 years. Old demonstrations are so much better than new animated text book explanation
A magnificent real-world demonstration. Nowadays it's all PowerPoint presentations and YouTube videos. Why not build a hypercube and demonstrate how it works?
Groovy.
Game changing technology …. ..hypereffectivity.
Best explination I ever saw
If the frequency is very high, will the change be less apparent?
In spite of the fact that I have no problem in seeing the full lecture in the Web site, is there any reason why the lecture is not uploaded in youtube? Sharing from youtube is easier than that from a Web site.
By the way, interesting demo.
Good demo
Amazing. Extremely intuitive.
That was very interesting way to show the doppler effect i have never seen that way before
Simple and smart.
Experiment=beauty
That’s a very intuitive and easy to understand demonstration.
I'm so sorry to be stupid but what is that thing he's dropping along the rope?
It's all fake news. There are no clothes pegs in a firetruck. And if so, I would be worried.
Does the speed of sound have anything to do with this?
– Well, I'm sure it does, since all the sound would be bunched up at the speed of sound?
Yes, but how exactly does speed of sound effect this experiment?
– I don't know, exactly how it would affect it at different speeds, and why.
Well, what if you go twice the speed of sound, will it make the sound precisely reversed?
– It seems that it would, actually. Since as you lay out the sound, the beginning would get to you last.
Okay then, what if you play a single tone at the speed of sound, will it sound like nothing?
– I suppose it would, since there are just as much high peaks as low peaks, all taking up the same place and time.
If you can offer more to this conversation, please do.
And frankly, talking to myself is not as exciting as people,
and it's also limiting on brains (as I do only have one of them).
That doesn't really demonstrate anything with waves except by analogy. There are so many kinds of waves you could've used that would actually demonstrate the doppler effect, it seems silly to use clothes-pins instead.
i love the demonstration
R V Jones made such a difference in WW2. Read his book the Most Secret War.
The complete lecture was great, thank you for posting these short clips.
