The Exciting, Perilous Journey Toward AGI | Ilya Sutskever | TED

TED

Just weeks before the management shakeup at OpenAI rocked Silicon Valley and made international news, the company’s cofounder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever explored the transformative potential of artificial general intelligence (AGI), highlighting how it could surpass human intelligence and profoundly transform every aspect of life. Hear his take on the promises and perils of AGI — and his optimistic case for how unprecedented collaboration will ensure its safe and beneficial development. (Recorded October 17, 2023)

  1. Ilya, as much I respect your intelligence and knowledge, I cannot help but hear this presentation as promoting some artificial religious gospel with vague terms like AGI. Please start by clear and scientific definition of this mystical AGI.

  2. The claim that “AI is just a digital brain” is quite profound. It implies that biological intelligence, including human intelligence, is nothing special, and that improving ‘intelligence’ itself is far more important than merely doing things with our current level of intelligence.

  3. The potential impact of AI on various sectors, especially healthcare, is thought-provoking. The balance between positive and negative implications is crucial. Excited to see how OpenAI addresses these challenges.

    Dedication

    Artificial Intelligence Developers

To the brilliant minds who dare to breathe life into algorithms.

To the creators of Artificial Intelligence, the architects of Artificial General Intelligence, and the dreamers (or architects of nightmares) paving the way to Artificial Super Intelligence.

May your code build wonders and not herald ruin.

May your creations bring light and not shadow the world.

For in your hands lies the power to shape the future—or to unravel it entirely.

Here’s to you, the masters of machines,

    The builders of tomorrow,

And perhaps, the unknowing authors of doomsday.

    Chapter 1

    Theocentric Philosophical Alignment

Artificial Intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence, and Artificial Super Intelligence. These three terms refer to different levels or types of Artificial Intelligence with varying capabilities and potential impacts.

Aligning Artificial Intelligence is a monumental task, akin to charting unknown waters. In the vast realm of belief systems, some argue that there are fundamentally just two paths: man's word and God's word. The crux of this assertion is that every religion, every philosophy, every belief boils down to either deriving from human interpretation or directly from divine instruction.

The concept of Theocentric Philosophical Alignment operates on this very principle. It emphasizes that, at the heart of every decision, every algorithm, and every piece of code, should be principles that align more closely with a God-centric perspective rather than merely human-centric logic. In doing so, the AI would not just be operating based on cold calculations or the whims of its programmers, but rather by universally accepted moral standards believed to be divinely inspired.

This isn't to undermine human achievement or the marvels of our intellect. Human thinking has led to incredible advancements in technology, society, and understanding of the universe. However, Theocentric Philosophical Alignment suggests that there is a higher moral ground, one that transcends our individual cultures, biases, and personal beliefs. By aiming for this alignment, AI would strive for a universal good, operating on principles that are timeless and unchanging.

In a world that's increasingly dependent on technology and AI, such an alignment could be the key to ensuring that our creations work for the greater good of all, without falling prey to the pitfalls of human error or bias. It's a challenging proposition, but one that holds the promise of a harmonious coexistence between man, machine, and the divine. Publishing late 2025.

  5. I fear that AGI will be the last thing humanity ever invents, and that the ultra-rich and will hold unchecked power over AGI. Totalitarianism with AGI is one of the most profound threats to humanity.

  6. 1. Artificial intelligence is nothing but digital brains inside large computers.
    2. How he got in to AI: interested in our own brains when he was young; curious about how intelligence works; if AI works, it would be incredibly impactful.
    3. AGI's impact: human's health care; It can improve itself.

  7. Do you think AGI happens in a corporations data center or on a peer 2 peer multi-agent network??. I see many of these decentralized networks springing up

  8. 1 It’s impossible to predict the future.
2 Throughout history, leaders with the biggest egos, not the most intelligent, have shaped and manipulated the history of humankind.
3 It’s possible that artificial general intelligence (AGI) won’t happen by 2200.
4 By using Python, Java, C++, and Julia, it’s next to impossible to replicate the brain and mind that took nature around 3.8 billion years to achieve.
5 Intelligence is much more than gathering skills and knowledge; it’s seeing life as a whole without self-centered activity. 💕☮🌎🌌

  9. Not to be a pessimist, but…
All access all the time to the computer Dr.

We have digital visits now and they still charge you the same things.

You also have to pay for the at home diagnostic tool.

So… over time sure brings cost down.

Up front it will be in-app-purchase for extra features.

  10. “AGI isn’t coming—it’s evolving. We’re entering the era where quantum systems and artificial general intelligence merge. The world needs to prepare not just for smarter machines, but for a new kind of civilization. Follow @AWSQuantumAGISupremacy as we shape the future one qubit at a time.”

  11. Neti-neti—not this, not that. As AI evolves, it may not just replicate intelligence but hold a mirror to humanity. By stripping away everything we are not, it could guide us to the silent truth of what we truly are.

  12. Shortly after I saw the InsideAI's video on a ChaGpt o's idiosincratic scarlett-like voice jailbreak AI assistant I thought how badly we need Ilya at Silicon valley right know. An LLM in the hands of greedy technological barons is like handing over an Icbm launch pad to an ape.. sad.

  13. The guy mustafa and Sam are extremely talented in my opinion. I believe they have an incredible talent to understand the future and direction of artificial intelligence.

  14. Unfortunately, Ilya is clueless on this topic. He doesn't understand anything about AGI. His goal of building ASI is a deluded man and his enablers chasing a mirage. He has no chance of success.
