The future of human agency – A conversation with Marcus Weldon and Stephen Friend

Nokia Bell Labs

Marcus Weldon, President of Bell Labs, interviews Stephen Friend, scientist, physician, entrepreneur, Chairman of Sage Bionetworks and member of the Apple Health team after he delivered his lecture at the Shannon Luminary Lecture Series in May.

Friend presented “The future of human agency: exploration of the role of art and technology in determining risk, awareness and free will”. He discussed his views on the roles of art and technology in understanding the implications of a future in which artificial intelligence, along with massive crowd-sourced data, will reveal novel insights empowering our choices, and may pose ethical dilemmas.

Building on the Claude Shannon Centennial Conference lectures, the Shannon Luminary Lecture series showcases speakers who are luminaries in a wide diversity of fields and will share their perspective on the most important technologies, science, engineering, mathematics – and even more aesthetic matters – that will transform human existence in the next decades.
