  1. Not very deep. Searle mostly talked about the "Easy Problem of Consciousness" and hinted at how refining its study will eventually lead to solving the "Hard Problem of Consciousness". It didn't seem that he grasped what the Hard Problem really is.
Goldstein's talk was mostly fluff. It sounded like she was promoting herself and her novel mostly, and tried to tailor her presentation to this topic at the last minute. It seemed she was just riffing on the idea of subjectivity. Her talk could have been called "Subjectivity in Literature Throughout History". I listened carefully, waiting for her to make some point related to the topic but became very frustrated.
Getting yourself to the point where you even see a need to understand, or see that there IS a Hard Problem, is not accessible to most people. Intellectuals and academics, no matter how smart, may not be the most qualified as I'm experiencing so far.
Let's see what part 2 brings. Thank for uploading though.

  2. Searle seems to me like a nice guy, I instinctively like him for some reason…but in this talk, all he does is state positions he does not prove. To him neurons or maybe something lower level (micro tubes) create consciousness – he just accepts that, but this is the question, how does that happen, and he just ignores the question and states without proof his assumed position.

  3. Awesome that we get to see talks like this and thanks for uploading though I wish the audio quality was better. The Chalmers, Denett Hoffman talk had better audio quality.

  4. Searle is almost disgustingly uncharitable to other positions, but he's such an enjoyable person to interact with and listen to. How can you not love this guy?

  5. Thank you for uploading this very interesting conference! I remember Rebecca Goldstein from Sean Caroll's congress 'Moving Naturalism Forward'. Also worth looking up on YouTube, even though its not a quick watch.
