The Hidden Spring: A Journey to the Source of Consciousness "Brainstem" – Dr. Mark Solms

MythVision Podcast

Where does Consciousness come from?

Does it arise in the brain or beyond the physical properties of ones brain?

Some suppose Consciousness arise from the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex or the nervous system.

What if the brain stem is the source of Consciousness?

How on earth does the experience of Consciousness arise from physical properties?

A revelatory new theory of consciousness that returns emotions to the center of mental life.

Mark Solms is one of the boldest thinkers in contemporary neuroscience, discovering how consciousness comes about has been a lifetime’s quest.

Scientists consider it the “hard problem” because it seems an impossible task to understand why we feel a subjective sense of self and how it arises in the brain.

Venturing into the elementary physics of life, Solms has now arrived at an astonishing answer.

In The Hidden Spring, he brings forward his discovery in accessible language and graspable analogies.

Solms is a frank and fearless guide on an extraordinary voyage from the dawn of neuropsychology and psychoanalysis to the cutting edge of contemporary neuroscience, adhering to the medically provable.

But he goes beyond other neuroscientists by paying close attention to the subjective experiences of hundreds of neurological patients, many of whom he treated, whose uncanny conversations expose much about the brain’s obscure reaches.

Most importantly, you will be able to recognize the workings of your own mind for what they really are, including every stray thought, pulse of emotion, and shift of attention.

The Hidden Spring will profoundly alter your understanding of your own subjective experience.

  1. This is, at least for me, one of the best video’s on Mythvision. I fully enjoyed Prof Solms presentation. I did have some questions, such as I did not make the connection between the first part of his presentation and the last part on homeostasis. However, this is a cut down presentation, and I am not necessarily fully following his argument.

I have listened to this about four times now, and I am blown away by the profundity of what Prof Solms say, and yet the simplicity of his argument. ( simplicity does not mean simple lol)

I am definitely reading Solms book – and It will be far more than once.
Thanks so much Derek for bringing prof Solms on the channel, and introducing us to this brilliant man’s ideas and research.

  2. homeostasis is the state of steady internal, physical, and chemical conditions maintained by living systems. This is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature and fluid balance, being kept within certain pre-set limits (homeostatic range).

  3. The metaphors and allegories or literary devices the writers were using back then relate to what they knew at the time rather than our modern interpretations of metaphors allegories ~~~so you have to forgive then ~~~most people now accept naturalism as being the accepted truth ~~that the earth goes round the sun rather than the stars going the earth

  4. So the brain consciously sends out signals unconsciously that consist of conciousness in order to make one concious of the fact that they are concious, in order to defend themselves from unconciousness

  5. Fascinating! It seems like he has something there. He's probably right.I like his scientific approach when dealing with emotions and consciousness. Why couldn't Jesus have talked like this, with more certainty of course. He could have solved so many health problems, including mental of course. But instead he "cast out"demons or told people they would not be healed without faith. If he really was omnipotent and omniscient,he could have boosted everybodies IQ to higher levels or even made them all geniuses to make them understand the things that would progress and advance society even to 21st century levels.I would read the books of most of the experts you present on your channel before I'd ever pick up a Bible again. Thanks Derek.I like your channel.

  6. Don't limit homeostasis: i am a panqualist, wherein every challenge to stability is a potential feeling. Dr. Solms focuses on emotion and so the brain stem is the final candidate. I look at particular thoughts so, my final focus is the cortex. A healthy person is what the cortex, brainstem, and cerebellum do *together*. The meditative experience that grounds human spirituality is, i think, an independent harmonic dynamic of all three together that grows from a global coherence of ideas, action/inaction, and emotion. Cheers!

  7. If consciousness is anything, it’s a gaol you can never escape from, and that’s assuming there even is a “you”. Like Wittgenstein said, you can’t see yourself see something. Even when you dream, you cannot dream of non-consciousness. Even if consciousness could transcend the body, it cannot transcend itself, basically a prison for itself in and of itself.

Sophocles was right. It is better to never have been born.

  8. Consciousness is not located anywhere because consciousness is not a “thing”. This is why I dismiss what he says because he is confusing different words and meanings (in this case, he is confusing consciousness, i.e. perception, sensual awareness, etc., with the epistemological process of said consciousness, basically saying that the awareness of awareness is located in a particularly place, which is absurd, and not the awareness in itself, making everything he says a tautology, no different than saying “I am here”. It’s recursive and circular).

Consciousness extends all through out your body. There is not a single source, some Cartesian well spring, for it. Take your hand for example. You know where it is at all times, and can feel its spatial and temporal position. (Whether next to you at rest, in front of you, behind you, and so on). The same is true for literally your entire body, safe for your insides. Can you feel your appendix? Your bones? Or the microscopic cells that composes the entirety of your being?

That’s all consciousness is. There is nothing mysterious or esoteric about it, nothing transcendental. Plato was the biggest fraud in philosophy, with Descartes and Baudrillard being the silver and bronze respectively.

  9. Where is no vision the people stagnate…
The brain is computer that allows for autonomy by providing a holodeck where upon it can do simulated evaluation and runs on neurons which are also found in the heart & stomach. It would make sense that the brain is simply a construction planning facility that can analyze the various input data in sympathy with these vitally important resource warehouses to provide mobility cognition and the variegated and sublimated requisite skillsets such as walking; talking et cetera all synchronistic with an objective complex task such as heart surgery. This shows almost that the brain is expendable…
