One of the most significant scientific discoveries of the early 21st century is surely the Higgs boson, but the boson and the Higgs Field that allows for that magic particle are extremely difficult to grasp. Don Lincoln outlines an analogy that all of us can appreciate, starring a large dinner party, a raucous group of physicists, and Peter Higgs himself.

So the discovery of the Higgs boson, a bump in a statistical curve, was only needed to confirm we had a mass-giving field? Is that enough of a result to build the LHC and pay these pretty expensive guys and gals working there each month?
Glad I didn't have to see Don's everlasting smile … again!
So the prize of a simple explanation of a complicated thing is….a bottle of champagne? Are u kidding me? Atleast give them some money
What is the Higgs field composed of?
Omg its the guy from fermilab
Thú vị quá!
Now THIS is brilliant, I finally understand what the matter with the whole Higgs and field and where the mass comes from
But on what basis do we determine a particle's interact with the higgs field??
thank you very much for this video
yes but what is mass
Ok. Great explanation… BUT one things missing. What gives Dr. Higgs his popularity?
In other words: Why do some particles gain more mass than other when they enter the field?
But who created this field?where is it?is everywhere?how can this field exist and where?
Anyone here after watching "Dark"?
Great analogy and great video.
Bu higgs alanının orijinal kavramından çok daha zor ve bir kısmı yanlış aq.
Nice explanation. But if the particle is named after Physicist Peter Higgs, then why does it called Higgs-Boson? Or a better question where did the boson come from?
How long it will take to you to give respect to non western scientists.
(boson) 👀
i have been trying to understand the higgs field for about a year now and i still understand nothing. It makes quantum physics work, but where does this energy come from? why does it permeate everything equally?
I have now got a possible explanation for my obesity
Set the speed to 0.75x if you have trouble understanding it.
Thats the best analogy so far thankyou.
I think you explained in the best way.
Why you didn't receive the prize?
So Higg’s boson behaves like a wave, but way harder to detect?
So does that mean that mass is some sort of magnetism?
Total rubbish and totally misleading. There is so much wrong with this analogy. The premise is wrong, as is the outcome. Higgs interactions account for less than 2% of an objects mass…. This the worst explanation of anything I have seen from Don. He should not have supported this analogy, and stayed closer to the facts….. go watch PBS spacetime or similar. I hope Don has better analogy on the Fermilab site
That sounds like definition of aether
That’s a good explanation
