And that's it for this run of the Language Files! Thanks to co-authors Gretchen McCulloch and Molly Ruhl, and animator Stephen Houston-Moore. And to answer the question that'll get asked ten times in response to this, these videos and comments get scheduled weeks in advance so I don't have to worry about actually being online when they launch.
Meanwhile throat singers: imma trill with the throat
ß
I think I actually did the velar trill
I had a stroke trying to understand that language
You could do a velar trill using a tonne of spit, if I understood it right it would sound like a football stadium going wild
me trying to say the grey boxes and half hacking my tongue out:
the demon i just summoned: youre saying it wrong dude
I can velar trill.
"Language Sounds That Could Exist"
"You can't make any of these sounds"
🤨
No one:
Me: Ppbbrrr eeeiillllc SHHHHHHLSDARRRDA
I think I'm doing a vella trill. It kinda sounds like a long loud cat-hiss. Its driving my dog crazy.
My glotteral lateral just sounds like when a deaf person talks.
BOOTS N CATS N BOOTS N CATS N BOOTS N CATS…… now u can bbox
I was hoping for him to make some of those ignored, but possible sounds.
i just forgot how to speak
Velar trill is totally possible! That’s called phlegm! XD
i can do the velar thrill
I can make a velar trill sound
Андрей Губин не стареет
i can do a velar trill it just sounds like purring
4:50 coming from a beatbox background we can do something like that, but it's inward, so taking air instead of releasing it, if you know some of these techniques try to do an inward k snare but longer
Okay but I always spelled it as “hiccup.”
Who TF spells hiccup as hiccough?!
Here's me, not concentrating on this on a low volume, wondering what the 'Great Bowel Shift' was.
Aw I thought you were going to say those unspoken sounds… boooo.
wait…
"hiccough" is a word?
make glottal lateral approximant un-grayed, i can do it easily
In Serbian language there is a rule that IPA is aiming for: "Write as you speak and read as it is written."
That means one sound per letter
( "a" is not /ei/ rather /a/ )
attempting most of those gray sounds just has me making bad uvular trills
Not sure if this counts, but in beatboxing there’s something called a slizzer roll (coined by slizzer, a beatboxer) where you curl your tongue backwards and press the underside of the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth. It is possible to cause a trill by either breathing in or just “sucking” the roof of your mouth (I don’t know how else to phrase that. This might technically count as a velar trill.
Wow, fascinating
The trailer seriously looks like a spoof trailer for a movie that's not being made.
Fairly sure I can make a few of those "impossible" sounds as described.
I've got a whole gradient of Wookie and Predator sounds from the front of my mouth to low in my throat.
I would say they're not part of speech because they're wildly impractical more than they are impossible.
I can trill a K sound, but i think its more of an anomaly with certain peoples genetics than a normal thing
Unfortunaly cant create an L sound with my vocal cords though
This is the kinda stuff I think about as I'm going to bed. "Why hasn't there been any letters added to the alphabet?" 😂 Well now I know
I've never spelled hiccup as hiccough… That's so weird.
I'm english and never knew hiccough was spelled like that! I thought it was hiccup!
velar trill is possible
1:03 isopropyl alcohol?
