The Madness of King George, Based on Alan Bennett’s acclaimed play The Madness of George III, takes a dark-humored look at the mental decline of King George III of England. Taking place in 1788, the film’s story begins three decades into George’s reign, as the unstable king (Nigel Hawthorne) begins to show signs of increasing dementia, from violent fits of foul language to bouts of forgetfulness. The King’s prime minister William Pitt (Julian Wadham) and his wife Queen Charlotte (Helen Mirren) are determined to protect the throne during this time of weakness, when many see it as an opportunity to overthrow the unpopular George, whom they blamed for the loss of the American colonies. Although doctors are brought in, their archaic treatments of the time prove of little value and therefore, in desperation, they turn to Dr. Willis (Ian Holm), a harsh, unconventional specialist whose unusual methods recall modern psychiatry…

  1. He didn't seem mad…just spoiled. Regular beatings would have straightened that out before he reached puberty. Its sad They waited till he was in his late 50's to lay a thrashing on him.

  2. Had the clothes and language been more updated to 2020 this is literally the current state of American government. Sad but oh so true.
Side note: I enjoyed how loose the guy chasing the kings' blouse was while he was running! Vveerry nice!

  3. Can somebody tell me how someone inscribed the year 1862 at the door of a 1788 movie set? See minute 0:53. Pitty they made that gaffe. The movie is perfect otherwise.

  4. We pay them even more now to wave. There's a royal queens charity based in Chicago that made $6,000,000 but didnt release an annual report because they only helped 6 people and it wasnt worth the effort! The IRS is investigating because normally that sort of stuff is what crime mob families do to shuffle illegal money around, but the royals are a crime family like no other!

  5. The TYRANT King George of England!
"A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people." ` Declaration of Independence of the United States of America

  6. It was beyond atrocious what they did to that man. I understand the lack of knowledge and treatments we have today but this broke my heart.

  7. Suspension of disbelief. A masterclass by the finest actors, impeccable direction, costumes, sets and script. A film one is better for having seen. Few adverts, great quality. A joy.

  8. Can not porphyria get controlled by a special diet and staying away from many drugs and alcohol ? Germans like sourcraut but cabbage can agrevate porphyria. Would king George have no problem today with what we now know about the disease ( Assuming a good doctor … )?
In the beginning they asked if America can get rid of the king why can't we ? Did it have anything to do with real Christians to in America. I suspect that Martha Washington and Catherine the great of Russia the same person. Assuming certain things I Tzar Theodore IV of Russia and Bellorussia and Ukraine ECT
