I just heard of this Kol Nidrei thing and was looking into it. Some say that the only promises the Kal Nidrei allows one to weasel out of is those which you didn't actually plan to break when you made them. This vid seems to imply that the Kol Nidrei was conceived of in order to weasel out of promises made in order to save your skin and logic would indicate that those, being the product of coercion, were never intended to be adhered to. So, which is it?
My life of 71 years has been so blessed by sweet, kind Jewish people, I feel closer to you than most Christians! Rabbi Gold sat with my husband when our little girl Theresa was dying…all night at the hospital. It was a choice from God, because the Rabbi was so much more real than someone "with all the answers". In classical music we had Holocaust survivors who taught us…both Jewish and Christian. It seems like whene ver we had a serious problem one of your kind helped. I believe our Lord wants me to tell you how much such Jewish people have meant to the general population everywhere. One year we went to a get together at a Conservative temple for Hannukah. I was the only one who knew the words to Rock of Ages and sang out…it made me sad, but with my little Mary medal and love for "my" Jews in life, it seemed very sweet. May this Yom Kippur be very singular in offerings for the world's sorrows and problems. Thanks for the talk…. Deanna Clark
Jews we will always remain. I just came back. I found the way back. I remember the first time a heard Kol Nidrei. That was an overwhelming felling and embarrassing moment, I cried.
Wickedness. How can you make a vow before your "god" annulling all your previous vows? Wouldn't that make your vow before your "god" annul as well? Very wicked. Jesus Christ is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Lol, the meaning isn't lost in the mists of time at all. Kol Midre was a way to reassure the Khazars that their new religion, Talmudism disguised as Judaism (chosen by their king by spinning a top to replace the embarrassing pagan practice of phallus worship — no joke) would not oblige them to adhere to one key principle of that religion. You see, the jews of today (including this one) aren't jews at all. They are decedents of the Khazars, none of whom ever stepped foot in the Holy land (well, until they were handed Palestine by the British for pulling America in the WW2). Yup. Real stuff, sorry!
What an impressive intelligent man he is….

I can't believe the comments, this oath is evil to its core. it allows you to make promises and break them, chear people. Then be forgiven. And ask f orgivness for the cheating you'll do in future. Don't listen to this sad story, theres a reason they've been kicked out of every country .
I am a devout Christian but I have loved the study and participation, in Judaism. Kol Nidre reminds me how important it is to atone for my sins and forgive those who have sinned against me. Judaism & Christianity have more in common than they do in differences and I celebrate both.
Greetings , i would be very much interested in your opinion, and the opinion of others; Is it possible that typology of Leviticus 16:5 represents Esau, Jacob, and Isaac? and by further extension represents Christians and Jews. Esau is the goat for the Lord, Jacob is the scapegoat, and Isaac the ram. All three represent the One Messiah Jehosha in the triune atoning sacrifice for our sins. This reasoning is based on the Hebrew word "saw-eer" in Lev 16:5, this word is first used in Genesis ch 27, where Esau is "saw-eer", and Jacob becomes "saw-eer azazel", when Rebekah places the skin of the goat on him and he is told to escape to Laban. The word "azazel" also means strong one against God, or God fighter, as does the name Israel given to Jacob. Day of Atonement is also the Day of Reconciliation, pointing to the prophetic reconciliation between members of the Biblical family, that is Christians, Jews, and Messiah Jehoshua . Malachi 4:4-6"
Thank you.聽 May G_d bless, provide, and minister to us, His servants this Yom Kippur.
I thought that the Catholics were the only ones to use guilt in an attempt to change behaviors. All my Jewish friends used to remind me that guilt was optional. Some truths, some ridiculous assertions. I was hoping to become educated about Kol Nidrei but instead now sadly have a less than favorable view about a version of racism, and bigotry I thought was anti-ethical in the jewish faith.
That's the meaning of freedom: you don't have to do something because someones tries to force you to. Nation, tradition and religion may help you along, but here we are told we have to live for it. The means becomes the goal.
You is my dad always…Shabbat shalom…馃槃
Jesus said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me."
This is not a real Jew speaking. Pride? The father of pride is satan! Y`shua was humble and completely different values than what you are advocating.
I'm an Indian, so far away from Jewish but here am I, trying to squeeze myself into this holy religion. I am trying to know more of these holy days, holidays and practice mitzvot and so on. Though by distance, blood and race I can never come near to you, I will remain a convert till the day I stay alive and would try to explore more and more
In view of what Rabbi said about the shrinking Jewish population, I think the Orthodox should change its stance against people of paternal Jewish descent. They still come from Jewish families if they have Jewish dads! They need you and you need them. Shana tova, and may G-d bless Jews everywhere.
Thank you.

Thank you Rabbi Sacks. You always speak so lucidly and cogently. The music of Kol Nidre is among the most haunting yet so beseeching. Shalom.
Inspiring interpretation of Kol Nidrei, but not historically accurate, since this prayer precedes the Marranos by about 500-600 years.
I long for the day when humanity evolves beyond mythology.
Wonderful lecture by rabbi Jonathan sacks. He is a. Great orator and communicator. He. Was also a philosopher and deep thinker and explains clearly the meaning of kol nidrei. He is an inspiration to many as he draws on music and history to explain the meaning one has lost. A remarkable man. Who has reached out to many through. His books lectures. The meaning of Jew. Judaism. And Jewish prayers thank you again rabbi. May your memory be a blessing and May I wish your family long life
Rest in peace, Rabbi. You will be missed by us all.

I reject the idea that the only way to have a Jewish home is to marry another Jewish person.
What a wonderful understanding of the meaning of KolNidrei. As a young Lady of just 80 years I learnt once more a beautiful addition to what I already understood to the meaning of our most sacred day in the Jewish calendar. Thank you. G-d Bless
God called His people 'stiff-necked' in the writings of old. He loved them and did not want to see them destroyed. So He punished them to try and get them to repent and be saved from destruction. Oh Jerusalem! Why do you kill the prophets sent to you? The time of Jacob's trouble is at hand. Many will meet their doom. Why God? Why? Is it not because Messiah will show up and defeat the wicked one and his armies? He will save the few left of Israel. They will see Him up close and ask Him where He got the scars. He will say, "In the house of my friends." Then finally the stiff-necked will become humble servents of Messiah.
