J Richard Gott was among the first cosmologists to propose that the structure of our Universe is like a sponge made up of clusters of galaxies intricately connected by filaments of galaxies – a magnificent structure now called the ‘cosmic web’. In this talk he shows how ambitious telescope surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey are transforming our understanding of the cosmos, and how the cosmic web holds vital clues to the origins of the universe and the next trillion years that lie ahead.
J Richard Gott is Emeritus Professor of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University and is noted for his contributions to cosmology and general relativity.

1. Natalie Portman is not a good actress
2. Gott's time travel book is a pretty big stretch
But he is a great presenter. The Kentucky accent just adds to it.
Without taking the induced magnetic field as the product of the gravitational field and displacement current (as in EM waves) of the quantum fields (the unified fields)into account, it will be impossible to explain the distribution of matter and anti-matter galaxies in the universe.
By filament you mean string right 😏
It's a crime that he wore that suit without a feathered hat.
6:48 this is because the space is stretching, it’s not expanding into anything it’s just getting bigger. This statement is impossible
If you think about it, the universe MUST expand in order to function properly. Otherwise, where would all the waste heat go? If you tried burning a log in a non-expanding universe, the smoke would have nowhere to go, and thermodynamic flow could not occur.
Unwatchable, for me. My hearing is not good but even with headphones, I found it very difficult to understand his annunciation.
I love his delivery. Does not make me feel stupid.
Raison Bread? = Red Shift? = accurately measures distances? OH, my bad. I keep forgetting C² is 'ABSOLUTE.' Nothing is absolute.
this man sound like Ross Geller…
I didn't know John Turturro did physics lectures too.
47:00 "…based on the Cold Dark Matter model of Jen Peebles" one of the old co-hosts of the Atheist Experience 😁
How do we know vacuum energy has no hydraulic type force it is not something we can create in a laboratory Nor is it something that is foreseeable to have within our Solar System. If it does that would be fuel for a faster than light travel.
We live in a fantastic liquid. (Esther if you will……. Our galaxies black holes etc? Amazing violent space storms.
I don't believe a word of what the so called "professor" is telling, and what he says what is proof isn't being proved at all.
Joe Gatto I know that’s you
Our universe is electric! No need for these made up particles.
Something is wrong with the fact that uniformly the are moving away faster the farther away they are. Wouldn't that imply that we are at the center of the universe? Because if I go 1 million light years away and again observe the universe through a telescope from there would it also appear that the farther away the stars are the faster they will move away? Or will it appear that in the direction of where the earth is stars are moving away slower than 1 million miles in the other direction, where stars are moving faster? Am I making sense? Does anyone see the problem with this picture?
All I can think about now is the spider at the center of the universe.
I bought a piece of land for investment a new years ago.
Can I sell it to a resident of another galaxy with a profit in a few hundred years from now?
It is in a good location.
I like the electric universe theory, no dark matter, no black holes.
Mr. Mackey, but cool, intelligent, and empathetic
The expansion of universe is a bad idea , based on observed movement , but that observed movement is nothing special , its what one would expect if Gravity is taken out of the equation. But rather then taking it out, they invent strange modifiers , strange mater , dark flow and other nonsense , when the picture is clear , There is no gravity on Universal scale where it maters . And on Planet scale , its again not Gravity but Electro Magnetic phenomenon .

What a wonderful lecture. I like his personal stories and his humility. Thank you.
