The only way to learn a language

러닝그라운드

Hello everyone? Today’s video is an important video that I really wanted to share. Dr. Stephen Krassen, the leading linguist of the 21st century (the linguist who established the theory of foreign language acquisition, the founder of the natural approach, and the creator of teaching English for immigrant students) said,’How do we acquire language?’ It was published in 1983. I think this video contains content that will be helpful to all language students as well as language teachers. It is said that the only way we learn language is when we receive understandable input in a low anxiety environment. And it is said that language acquisition is achieved when there is no sense of self-belief, strong motivation, high self-esteem, and anxiety. Dr. Krassen says that there are two main ways to learn a language: learning to know unconsciously, and learning to learn a language like studying. And it is said that language is not something that can be obtained through study (learning), but that if you receive enough interesting inputs that you can understand, you will naturally learn it without wanting it. (The Natural Approach) As a person with a PhD in’grammar’, I also believed that learning and learning had to go hand in hand in order to be fluent and accurate in a language, but the results of research over the past decades have found that this idea is wrong. He said he learned that the ability to speak fluently and accurately is achieved through learning, not learning. There are also many other videos of Dr. Krassen on YouTube, and watching the videos gives us a little insight into how our thinking has evolved over the past 40 years. Recently, voluntary reading is recommended as the most effective method for language education. Those who did self-reading were said to perform significantly better on reading comprehension, vocabulary, speaking, grammar, listening, and writing skills than students who studied the traditional way. If you would like to learn more about the importance and benefits of reading the original text, please read the book Krassen’s Reading Revolution. And for those of you who think that learning is possible only for small children and adults are different… It is said that everyone learns a language the same way. In other words, as you age, your language acquisition ability does not lose or decline. There is the same hypothesis of the’Critical period hypothesis’ in foreign countries, but there are more cases of speaking fluently at the level of native speakers even though they learned language as an adult. A prime example is Steve Kaufmann, who started learning languages at the age of 50 and speaks more than 15 languages. (Link to Korean conversation video: https://youtu.be/8o80iRtruro?t=429)

Second Language Acquisition, the study of acquiring a second language other than the first language, has not a long history and because there are so many variables for each individual learning a language, there is never a single case in which all scholars agree upon new arguments. However, the content of this video released in 1983 has changed from grammar and drill-centered education around the world to a way to understand English naturally (The Natural Approach). Of course, after this announcement, various other methods have been suggested, and some scholars disagree 100% with Dr. Krassen’s opinion, but no one believes that they can speak the language without receiving enough input. And I think there is a good reason for the arguments made by linguists who have spent a lifetime researching the best way to learn English. Rather than having negative thoughts from a bad perspective, I hope you will listen to Dr. Krassen’s words about what kind of mindset you should have when learning a language through this video. “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” -Website of Dr. George Bernard Shaw Stephen Krassen
