The psychology of your future self | Dan Gilbert

“Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished.” Dan Gilbert shares recent research on a phenomenon he calls the “end of history illusion,” where we somehow imagine that the person we are right now is the person we’ll be for the rest of time. Hint: that’s not the case.

  1. Does this talk apply to women too? Or is it just a coincidence there are no examples of women with Big Five personality traits, likes and hobbies throughout these graphs…

  2. This guy knows the psychology of self? THIS guy? Lol. A more arrogant obnoxious self important self absorbed high on his own suppy person I have never encountered in my entire life. Ok, Professor Douche-Bag… Mr. PHD (piled high and deep)….. do the world a favor and SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE…. and we just love you on the Prudential commercial wearing the pretentious 1939 glasses asking how much money we have. Classy….

  3. change happens because because it is encoded in our DNA, without this change, we would be as creative as calculators. Through this mechanism deterministic universe, the formation of the functional models of behavior, who say  FREE WiLL

  4. change is inevitable…The first step is acceptance, but that doesn’t make transition easy. We can try to avoid making tough decisions, but eventually we must become mature enough to know ourselves, accept our limits, and say no.The change at the earlier age is more drastic compared to changes at old age.

  5. This talk is in-comprehensive and is the epitome of a fault of many of these types of things. TED talks bank too much on "wacky" and "woah" narratives without giving much discussion about it. It's on the same level as racists who present violence statistics to prove their point.

  6. The decisions we make keep changing with time. Our future selves regret the decisions made by our past selves. The rate of change of decision slows by the age. We believe in an illusion that our personal history has come to an end. The three values which matter most are pleasure, success and honesty but the importance of these values change with time. People underestimate the change they are going to experience in the next ten years. This is called end of history illusion. We overestimate the stability of the current preferences. Time alters our preferences, personality and reshapes our values. The one constant in our life is change.
