The Sociology of Gossip: Elaine Lui at TEDxVancouver

TEDx Talks

Lainey isn’t looking to impress anyone, especially celebrities. The ETALK Reporter and scribe of the immensely popular celebrity gossip blog, LaineyGossip.com, does what she does for one reason — to provide a gossip education to the Canadian public. The Toronto-born, self-proclaimed gossip maven got into the gossip game in a very roundabout way. What started as an email to two friends grew to a website with active followers from around the world. More than one million people now read LaineyGossip.com every month, making it a leading international celebrity news source. Elaine’s years of experience in the media, celebrity entertainment and blogging space have helped her shape a fascinating TED talk about gossip and it’s critical place within modern pop culture.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. Hence why it is nobody’s right to censor thought or speech. People are free to speak their minds. If it hurts someone, then that person or their advocates can step in and defend themselves.
I know people who talk about others in venting or just expressing etc., who do it unconsciously and some consciously.
They do it and I have a free choice to take on their opinions or perceptions as part of my reality or not, but I do Not censor their speech as they have a right to think and speak.l Let them be and I do my own self care. I don’t need to enslave someone else’s thoughts or feel self righteous that I think I am the owner of their mind and expression of such.
Many people triggered here by her neutrality. She’s educated on the subject without biased emotions. She studied the subject.

  2. The life of gossip is so sad. Yikes! If she was so good at gossip she would know that Rihanna was being physically abusive.” But that’s none of my business is it!

  3. It is an invasion of personal lives, why don’t they ‘gossip’ with in an ethnical way lol, like you don’t have to leak people’s names to talk about sociological issues.

  4. There are people who gossip lies about others and therefore no person who gossips should be trusted.
    Psalm 5:9
For not a word they speak can be trusted; destruction is within them. Their
throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.

There is nothing good about gossiping and it is very easy to enter gossip when watching Hollywood gossip. Leave hollywood alone and stop gossiping.

  5. I think she is talking about macro gossip (gossip about celebrities) which is a reflection of us sociologically as a culture ; where as work or neighbourhood gossip is more micro in nature and its impact is very much more personal in nature that ends up causing lasting damage. Celebrities, while human, have volunteered to be on the receiving end of gossip by the act of choosing a public career whereas no one working in an office or living in the neighbourhood has actively signed up to be the source of gossip. It’s a spectrum.

  6. This was so interesting. Love the part where you described it as a system and dove deep into how it all works. Gossip is truly harmful and it's important to know how to deal with it. Thanks for sharing – cheers!

  7. We all are seeing what the gossipers wants us to see… We are like dummies. We don't use our brains anymore. Plus we are so busy into others lives that we don't even pay attention to ours.. 😥

  8. Sorry, but famous people ask to be gossiped about.  If you know you are in the public eye you know you will be watched and judged.  It's what makes you famous.  My mouther always said 'watch your words and your behavior; as if I was always watching you.

  9. Gossip is a tool. This speaker was very engaging with her presentation, a sociological examination is definitely worth while but how we feel about movie stars; like the Greek gods they were (are) fallible, and its cool to see the mighty make the same base mistakes we do. I might even say that maybe there a fewof types of gossip, two examples might be truth gossip and gossipy lies. And the science more suitable to measure this might be Anthropology instead of Sociology. The speaker here can be pro-gossip because its the Greek god type of gossip – 'the mighty have fallen'.

The gossip I know is a weapon used not against stars but someone you dont like. More like a propaganda regimen that functions as slow tearing apart of a person, maybe classically to make you feel better about yourself by methodically campaigning against someone who doesnt know what youre doing. A coordinated guerilla attack.

  10. ty for your work in social behavior, talking about substituting the truth with a falsehood was hard to detect

  11. "He becomes guilty: Of detraction who, without objectively valid reason, discloses another's faults and failings to persons who did not know them. Detraction and calumny destroy the reputation and honor of one's neighbor. Honor is the social witness given to human dignity, and everyone enjoys a natural right to the honor of his name and reputation and to respect. Thus, detraction and calumny offend against the virtues of justice and charity."- Catechism of the Catholic Church, Part 3, Section 2, Chapter 2, Article 8, Subsection 3, Paragraphs 2477 and 2479

  12. This is not about gossiping guys, This is about dissecting human behavior in the mass media. The way celebrities behave is a reflection of human behavior and sets standards for many people that are influenced by it. This is a brilliant Tedtalk, and you will only get it if you think outside the box.

  13. Dont know how I got here .Watched for 3 mins .She obviously likes the sound of her own voice .Comparing science to celebrity gossip .what a moron.

  14. It is too often harmful…… "Verily I say, the tongue is for mentioning what is good, defile it not with unseemly talk. God hath forgiven what is past. Henceforward everyone should utter that which is meet and seemly, and should refrain from slander, abuse and whatever causeth sadness in men.” – Baha'u'llah, Baha'i Faith
