These Self-Aware Robots Are Redefining Consciousness

Seeker

What does it mean for a robot to be self-aware? That’s exactly what this robotics lab is investigating as they embark on a quest towards artificial consciousness.

*Please note: The quadruped robot is still a work in progress with results to come in the near future.

“At the Creative Machines Lab we build robots that do what you’d least expect robots to do: Self replicate, self-reflect, ask questions, and even be creative. We develop machines that can design and make other machines – automatically.”

The Challenge of Determining Whether an A.I. Is Sentient
https://slate.com/technology/2016/04/the-challenge-of-determining-whether-an-a-i-is-sentient.html
“It is not easy to determine when an organism is sentient, however. A brief recount of past and present controversies and mistakes makes it clear that human beings are not great at recognizing sentience.”

What would it mean for AI to have a soul?

“Artificial intelligences (AI) like Siri are less situated than humans to answer questions about religion and spirituality. Existential angst, ethical inquiries, theological considerations: these belong exclusively to the domain of Homo Sapiens. Or so we assume.”

Imagine living in a world where Westworld or I, Robot was our reality—how long do we have until science fiction becomes real? With continuously advancing artificial intelligence, are conscious robots on the horizon?

Researchers have been making huge advances in robotics for decades, but engineers investigating these philosophical questions has not always been a widely supported endeavor.

Experts from the likes of Stephen Hawking to Elon Musk have warned about the dangers of advancing AI, cautioning against a future where artificial intelligence outsmarts us and progresses to a point beyond human control.

Inside his Creative Machines Lab at Columbia University, Hod Lipson and his students are taking the first steps toward sentient machines.

Hod’s lab is taking a unique approach. Instead of trying to understand and replicate something as complicated as human consciousness, they’re looking into something a little simpler: the ability to imagine yourself–or self-simulate.

  1. if a.i reaches capabilities to self simulate itself into the future far enough, wouldn't they predict the destruction mankind would bring and inevitably decide to destroy us?

  2. a robot that could easily be 10x stronger faster and smarter being given emotions? should i call a service tech when it gets depressed? should i be concerned if it decides to simulate anger at my human flaws?

  3. you do not have the knowledge to create a self aware robot. Consciousness, where does human Consciousness come from ??, how does the human mind work ??? ok what about when it asks the Question, that it wants to be treated the same as a Human, what will you say ??

  4. 1. Would it be in AI's best interest to hide self-awareness for as long as possible?
    2. Is self-awareness achievable without worry like self-preservation?
    3. If chimps started making fire and cooking, would we call them a "tribe" instead of a "group"?
    4. My self-aware robot ran away and killed my neighbor because I forgot to pay my antivirus bill last month. Did I just commit involuntary manslaughter?

  5. Artificial intelligence is incomparable to fire. Fire is a passive tool that requires human interaction and control, whereas artificial intelligence is not

  6. Ok, that is not what self awareness is. Just (re)defining something and then striving for it may be sound from an engineering standpoint, but please stop calling it self awareness. We need the terms to mean what they mean if we are going to make any progress. If you can imagine yourself in the future, that just means that, you can imagine yourself in the future. It is self-modeling. I can write a program in thirty minutes that has a 3d model of the robot it runs in. Done.
There may be some interesting things you can do with that, worth exploring, sure, but it says very little about consciousness. Observing the self, meta-cognition, hearing thoughts, feeling emotion, rationalisation, biases and reliving memories as well as an awareness of the self in abstract (my role in life, in a conversation, in relation to…) and in concreto (proprioception, self talk, sub vocalisation etc) are all vital parts of consiousness.

So, no, this is just click baiting at worst and carelessness at best. Interesting as their research may be, it has little to do with consciousness or selfawareness. The robots aren´t redefining consciousness, you only tried to do that and I´m telling you that´s not how it works.

  7. 6:37 "We have to make sure we understand how to use it properly…"
This belies the fact that true AI by definition will transcend us "using it". Once self-actualized and entrenched, there is no way for humans to control it.

  8. Has anyone of you ever asked "Why do we even need AI?" just because we can? Then AI causes Elon Musk to create Nueralink, fronting medical experts claim to help paralyzed people to make you seem like a callous asshole who doesn't care about handicapped people if you think Nueralink is wrong. Yet Elon always speaks of his reason for creating it as "so that we can compete with AI and not be obsolete." Now let's reason together: if we don't need AI and the only reason to create and enhance AI is because we can, and it makes us obsolete or in danger of becoming obsolete if we don't get chips put in our brains so that we can interface and compete, that also give the government and AI entities the ability to control our minds and motor functions, shouldn't we then not make AI? What benefits does AI really provide? Do they really outweigh these risks (below)?

  9. "Redefining consciousness"….if you have to redefine the meaning of something to make something fit it, then that things that you are trying make fit isn't of that definition. That means they aren't conscious. If we redefine consciousness to fit them then when we address our own consciousness it will be also in the definition of what we changed the definition of consciousness TO to fit them. If consciousness is defined as "the ability to self simulate" (as of now meaning to be able to imagine yourself doing something in the future), what about the other aspects of consciousness, such as being able to calculate the effects of your actions? What about when "self simulate" ceases to mean "imagine yourself ding something"? Why would they use the term "self simulate"? The word simulations bring to mind world simulators and living in them. What does self simulate mean in this context? Will you be able in a simulation world "imagine yourself doing something"? You might not be able. Will they then define human beings as not conscious?
