Total Hip Replacement

Nucleus Medical Media

There is a newer, less invasive version of this procedure. Watch our animation about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqnYGSS8n1s

This 3D medical animation depicts total hip replacement surgery of the left hip. The procedure includes the incision, exposure of the hip joint, placement of the acetabular hip prosthetic component (socket), removal of the arthritic femoral head, and placement of the femoral head prosthesis (ball).

  1. No matter what you see from patients who say they had no problem with surgery. This surgery is painful. I had my left hip replaced at 10:00am and at 6:00pm that evening they wanted me up and walking. I said hell no and cussed the doctor out. I told him from the beginning i was sensitive to pain and did not believe me. Ended up staying an extra day in hospital because they could not manage my pain.

  2. I had my left hip replaced in 2014 & now I need my right hip done in 2019. I have Avascular Necrosis due to sickle cell disease. I'm ready for it cause this pain is constant!

  3. This film clip is very dated, today many, if not most hip replacements are done under a local nerve block with sedation, to relax the patient. This makes recovery time much quicker and hospital discharge much sooner. This frees up the waiting list for patients in the queue, cuts costs and most patients recover much quicker in their own surroundings.

  4. Hip Resurfacing is a better solution, less damage done, no risk of dislocation and wider range of movement, plus it doesn’t wear out.

  5. I am only 34 (almost 35) I had Perthes Disease (bilateral) as a child and I need to have a total left hip replacement. My right hip is also showing signs of degeneration and at some stage needs to be replaced as well. So I am looking at two hip replacements before I am 50

  6. lives in mtius.had my total hip replacement in 2015 and2016 i can say i am in better condition now thks to my docter he operated me very quickly .it do feel weird to know that there's something inside you but it's for our good.

  7. I've bee watching all these videos. I'm getting a new hip replacement on 2/26/28 in I'm very scared cuz they probably won't give u meds to help wit this pain. Wat Tylenol.

  8. I had mine 14 months ago and then without warning it dislocated twice in a span of 3 weeks, still healing, one or two more dislocations and it revision surgery for me.  DO NOT PIVOT on the foot that is on the hip replacement side unless your foot can slide on the surface it is on rather easily. The pain is way past a bad back injury, I have a herniated lower disc(L-4 L-5) and it has never even compared to the hip dislocation..

  9. By the time you read this comment, you probably had the procedure done. If you are looking into a replacement on the other side, you might want to look into a Hip Resurfacing procedure. I had a resurface done 4 years ago and it feels great and it's more durable. If your an active person, a resurface is a better option. My femur wasn't cut off. The only thing that was replaced was the ball and socket. The femur was still good but the ball had the arthritis. If anybody out there is looking, look into a Resurfacing instead of "replacement".

  10. Theres no such thing as a minimally invasive hip replacement! Theres also no need for a general anaesthetic, spinal with a bit of sedation is enough!
