This video examines how nihilism is established and treated in the current TV landscape. The video particularly deals with the character-driven nihilism of Rick and Morty before moving on to nihilism not bound by individual characters, but instead of elements surrounding them.
My intentions with this video is twofold. One, I wish to entertain my viewers. Two, I wish to educate people on what to notice when analysing a piece of TV or cinema philosophically.
Nihilism in media isn’t confined to the existential kind. It’s hard to define precisely as the term has had a muddy past. Instead, it leans up against a philosophical/philosophy movement like postmodernism, although there are key differences between the two. Another great upload 🙂 keep it up!
Just want to say that was a excellent analysis of Black Mirror. I have not viewed the show that lens but certainly will in the future.
Does anyone know what show 1:41 is?
Really interesting insights. The growing trend of nihilism in television is fascinating

The only problem I have with Nihilism in the media, besides the often misportrayal of Nietzsche, is that they do the reduction to Nihilism, but they never attempt at the overcoming of it. I'm sorry but I'm writing this right after finishing Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil where my take on it included the insights from Thus Spake Zarathustra in which Beyond Good and Evil is Nihilistic in every sense of the word; however the goal of the book is not to make someone a Nihilist, but to propose a challenge to make someone and anti-Nihilist. I mainly watched this because the video image was that of Rick and Morty where I think that the Nihilism there isn't actually portrayed well, and it seems we would agree. I cannot comment on the Black Mirror however since I have never heard of it before this. So in a sense, it seems that every form of media attempts to be Nihilistic, but they all miss a greater opportunity in it.
Dear Simon, that was a very perceptive piece. Well done! I hope you can share more of your insights on this topic an perhaps point us towards works which discuss more these things. Hope that you are well. Keep trying! Will
The title of Black Mirror itself provides imagery for the concept of nihilism, however reductionist, i.e. trying to peer into the world, and having only darkness reflected back.
Can a series seeking to capture non-character driven (negative?) nihilism be anything but a dystopic, episodic anthology? It is highly reminiscent of the Twilight Zone, the Black Mirror of the last century.
People like Nietzsche try to destroy nihilism. Cuz they dont wanna see the reality this cruel world. Thats why fascism as anti nihilism lose the battle. Cuz there is no perfect in this world
Hello Wisecrack.
How about nihilistic humour? Is there any great example? And is it the same with 'black comedy'?
This should be called how to say nothing in 5min… You give no example, no theory, there is no method, everything is superficial… Man get back to work
Please, what is the name of movie on 0:59 ?
