Virgil Abloh Explains Why Streetwear Is an Art Movement

HYPEBEAST

HYPEBEAST Magazine Issue 20: The X Issue, prominently featured Virgil Abloh on the cover. Arguably the most important figure in streetwear today, Abloh sat down with us for our DIARIES series to talk more in-depth on the current state of streetwear, comparing it to an art movement where “essentially I’m just an assistant to the people that came before me trying to add to go forward for the next generation.”

The Off-White™ designer and architect says, “more than anything I feel like I’m a descendant of everyone from Kanye West to Pharrell Williams to Basquiat or Warhol,” when asked about he labels himself. In terms of the bigger picture for streetwear, Virgil says he doesn’t want the larger fashion community and ecosystem to view it just as a trend that comes and goes — streetwear as an art movement that inspires other industries hasn’t been realized yet but it has started to show. Most importantly, Abloh says it’s important for him to stay true to himself, wearing Jordans and a T-shirt to the Met Gala and playing Migos at his fashion show.

You can listen to the rest of the interview above and check out the full spread in Issue 20 of HYPEBEAST Magazine. Be sure to keep an eye peeled for our full Virgil Abloh documentary coming soon.

  1. Man I really do like some of the stuff Virgil designs but listening to him speak on his ethos and design process is grueling, maybe it’s the questions/interviewers fault but it’s difficult to listen to him speak on fashion

  2. IN a word "Bullshit", lets not be mistaken …Virgil you are the new shiny affirmative fetish at the door w/a white creamy middle!!! The bottom line of it all is that the luxury houses and all it's ivory tower aloofness has run clean out of stories. Due in fact that the staff is stacked with same race /and pedigree from the creative direction to assistants. . They have all the means and nothing to say. that resonates w/the street.

Where the real disposable income blood flow runs deep. Blood money moves units…not special glass case pieces. Like most elite euro business that has locked and blocked out the voices of a specific class/race and hue..we become Caption Save a bitch with our street lullabies

  3. I really hoped dude was as interesting as y'all have made him to be the past 3-4 years. Lmao not captivating much at all or inspiring.

  4. aside from the likes and you knows, Virgil is a genius
I have a lot of respect for him because (this is going to sound really dumb) my grandma knows him and his mother and because I own some off white

  5. All about image-making, marketing, hyping, illusion of value, less substance. Haha it's all fine to buy into this street luxury concept shit as long as it's fun. But at the end of the day their quality is same as all the products that are 200% more affordable. Yeah yeah I don't get the Art significance blah blah side.. And I'm so glad I don't get it. God job Virgil! You're a deception Master. I'd like to be like you if I only know how. Must be fun to trick thousands of fools.

  6. Stolen designs, lazy and over priced work, but he’s a “creative” so let’s pretend he is a revolutionary designer like Rick Owens and the Antwerp 6

  7. Off white is for hipsters that ain’t no street wear plus those jeans is European cut and I’m an American sell that shit over seas to m a Tommy Hilfiger Nautica polo America clothing that will never play out off white will get played out soon just a fad he keep saying street culture he not from the streets niggas don’t even wear off white I don’t see street people wearing that shit

  8. To me he is not a real true designer he's just lucky his off white label boosted his opportunity for a LV collaboration to capitalise on his hype its fast fashion & a fad based incentive & the fashion he designs is not classic its all going to date & the luxury houses are tapping into an elitist hype & they are winning for it but he's just a pawn in the LV fashion house & eventually he will be just that guy who designed for LV.
Im happy for him but in the long scheme of things this too will pass. Its fashion not style.
