Watercolor Poppies REAL TIME Painting Demonstration

Maria Raczynska

More Poppies! I got a request to paint a field of poppies😋so there’s another video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOZrwYWU0TI I just uploaded as well, this one is just a little different style. I thought I’d share it as well as it’s much quicker and less detailing (and it doesn’t require white gouache – my secret addiction😅) 🌹🌸

There’s more requested videos coming up… all will be uploaded soon to my youtube channel so please keep checking 🌺

Thank you everyone for being part of my Youtube Channel. I really enjoy reading your comments ☺️🙃I love our community here! You guys are the reason I keep uploading new videos!

I’ve been getting a lot of similar questions so I have created a Q/A. Just keep scrolling down and you may find some answers about watercolor PAPERS, pigments, taping down etc 😃👇🏼
Part III is below 💕 I and II in my previous videos!

The white pigment I use is DESIGNER’S Gouache – color PERMANENT WHITE, which is an opaque version of watercolor. I use it instead of my regular watercolor whites which are too transparent for my style of painting.

Paper: Rough, 140lb, 100% cotton – watercolor paper

PART III

Most common questions I get and here are some answers:

♦︎14.WHY DO I USE IT SOMETIMES AND OTHER TIMES I DON’T?♥︎
(art masking fluid for watercolors)
It depends on what I am painting. If I paint an underwater sea turtle and the water is turquoise I don’t want my turtle to get any of that blue in its body so I will protect it with the fluid. If I paint a sea boat and it’s a sunset, where the boat would be in similar tones I won’t worry too much about the background paint going over the boat.
It depends on how much you want to protect the white areas. If you need them to stay all the way white, then you will need the art masking fluid for sure. Especially if those spots are very small or complex. But if those areas will be painted over later, then you may not need the fluid.

♦︎15.CAN I COPY YOUR PAINTINGS?♥︎

Yes of course that’s what my tutorials are for so you can paint along with me. So again yes as long as you are not trying to make money off of the copies. ©

♦︎16.WHERE DOES MY INSPIRATION COME FROM?♥︎

Everything that’s around me, memories from travels, childhood, things I see everyday.

A good practice is.. wherever you are.. absorb everything with your eyes, look at the sky, look at the ocean, lake, river, trees, your neighbors backyard, a dog, anything that surrounds you and examine its shapes/ colors/ structure.

When I look at things I always imagine how would I paint it. How would I create that fog below the mountain or clouds sitting on top of the mountain.

You absorb colors and shapes with your eyes and carry those memories with you when you are ready to start painting. I recommend to always plan ahead. I believe you will be the most efficient in your work when you think before picking up a brush and create your palette. Like if you are painting from a photograph, look at it and think of the colors you see, the colors you see underneath the colors what to use to create those shades of blues pinks greens… and perhaps what colors you need to mix and what would help you to create a texture.. a sponge? a tooth brush? a plastic wrap? a cotton ball?

Part I and II are in my previous videos 🙂

  1. Painted poppies today after watching 2 of your wonderful watercolor poppy videos. Just what I need to help me paint loose. And, what is the beautiful music at the beginning of this particular video? I played it again and again. Would really appreciate knowing. Thank you.

  2. New subscriber, watching you paint is such a pleasure – seeing the work change with the adding of layers & lifting of colour. I've only been painting (acrylics) about 6mths & watching watercolours purely for pleasure. You mentioned the rough paper being 'different' in this vid; I recently had a try at watercolours & was limited in what paper pads I could get in local stores. My paint did not behave on the paper like in any of the beginners YT tutorials I've watched, so I've just checked all 3 Watercolour pads I'd tried & they all say Rough Texture 300gsm – Should I be looking for something different?

  3. Thank you Maria how beautifully composed are your Poppies ..I look at nature the same way you do and I too find such beauty in her Perfection. Thank you for sharing, and stay blessed.🌿🌺

  4. Absolutely gorgeous. I have looked at how many videos you have on here and it's great that you have categorised them into beginner, intermediate and advanced. It makes it easier for someone to choose what to do x

  5. Love watching you paint. I see how you paint a part then lift it leaving a smooth even light color. very nice. Thank you Maria. Still need practice using a #16 he-he-he
