  1. On the other hand, the mass of our built environment has exceeded the total biomass of all plants, animals, etc.

Humans have forever and irrevocably shaped the narrative.

  2. I kind of disagree here John

We are the only ones with the sentience and intelligence to truly understand what a "story" is. Life and nature is just meaningless processes. Humans make it a "story". I'm happy for us to adapt nature to fit us better, so long as we don't destroy it.

  3. Being a small part is humbling, but it's important to remember that we are far from insignificant. The main character of almost any story is only a small part of their own far grander world, that's where the journey begins.

  4. I'm the main character fighting the following main characters elsewhere of this world, it's like a crossover TV show made to get a higher ratings for both creators of each show.

  5. If I'm being real I don't get what this mentality like actually means. Like I feel like it's saying something but that something isn't super useful in my mind. Not that you shouldn't partake in it, I just don't see it's value I guess

  6. When I look at the universe, I tend to realize that most of it is entirely made of nebulae and stars, some of it is made of heavier elements made by stars, and some of it is made of supermassive black holes—which are collapsed stars. Only a small fraction of the remainder of the universe that we’ve ever observed is alive, and all of it is made of star dust. It seems to tell me that among the universe’s emergent properties, life isn’t the main character; stars are.

  7. One way I love to remind myself how small I am is to go up onto a mountain (in my case, the granite-covered White Mountains, mostly) and look out at the large swath of trees and rivers

  8. I entertain myself with the thought of being a minor villain that is part of a league that conflicts with other leagues, and so I just decide to do a 'good deed' every once in a while to feel and appear less villainous than the other minor villains. 🙃

  9. Everyone is their own protagonist. We can't choose what type of character we play in the story of others. This was true in BC, this is true for mycelium.

  10. So true. Sometimes I need to go outside and just step in some mud puddles and listen to frogs and see how close to a goose I can get before it notices me and then run away because I just remembered how mean geese are and I am not about to get beaten by a bird in a fight. It's the little moments that matter.

  11. the leafless branches reminded me of your book "turtles all the way down" because aza still has has her late dad's phone and the photos there are those dead branches forming irregular polygons out of the sky.
