With Westworld back for Season 3 fans are already working overtime in wondering what could be going on in this world full of splendor.

As with all new seasons in the series, the third entry has a brand new opening credits scene and it is possible that there are messages hidden within that could tease what exactly is going on.

Throughout this, we’re gonna be breaking down the introduction and discussing what it could be hinting at in the future.

We will be going over some of the plot points from the first episode so if you’re not fully up to date then I highly recommend that you turn off now.

With that out the way, I just wanna give a big thank you for clicking this. Now let’s get into our breakdown of Westworld’s opening credits.

Westworld Season 3 Opening Credits Breakdown
The third seasons has changed quite a bit from what we are used to in several ways. Dolores is now out in what could be the real world and the entire aesthetic of the show has completely changed.

The credits open much in the same way that all of the prior entries have with what appears to be a sun rising.

In the first season this was the sun rising over a human host, in the second it was the body of a buffalo host and in this third entry it is the body of an eagle host that appears throughout the opening.

Westworld opening credits scene explained

In the first season the human host could have ended up in several, ahem positions. Two were seen getting it on and another ended up riding on a horse firing a gun, similar to how Dolores would in the second entry.

This showed the rising of the hosts in the park and how they would connect with one another and rebel against the park.

In season two the Buffalo ended up jumping over the edge of the science area in the park showcasing that the entire illusion was going to come crumbling down.

In the third opener, the bird flies towards a jet engine that then transforms into the sun and slowly the bird melts and begins to fall apart.

This is clearly a nod to Icarus, the ancient Greek story in which the aforementioned character flew too close to the sun in an attempt to escape Crete.

Icarus and his father created wings made of wax in order to escape the location but as we mentioned they got to close to the sun, the wax melted and they ended up falling to their death.

This could metaphorically show that the hosts are flying too close to the sun and are getting in a very dangerous position that will ultimately lead to their downfall. They have passed into a world that they simply aren’t equipped to deal with and are close to falling apart because of it.

Birds used to be the only thing that could fly on the planet, then man built the airplane and proved that human ingenuity could match mother nature. This bird being overtaken by the jet could show that humans can always develop something to take down or match the hosts should it come to it.

  1. The arrows on Rehoboam during the intro are eerily similar to the arrows on charlottes sons pillow when she tucks him in earlier in the season. IDK if it means anything but it seems important for some reason…

  2. The eagle is Arnold, the name Arnold mean eagle power.

What about the part where it turns into an eye/Rehoboam before the sun? Rehoboam also shows up after the host is dipped into the red liquid.

I think Delores will find out that they are all hosts and the real world, as shown in the picture for this season, is ruined. Remember the last episode of season 2, the after credits scene shows William in the “real world” and it has been obliterated. I think the game that’s made for him is to help humans escape the enslavement of AI.

  3. I see the fall of the Buffalo and the fall of the Eagle ..and the jet is actually a Solar Corona and the world is seeded by something that ushers in the new world order ..

  4. Is it a coincidence that Arnold means “powerful eagle” and here we have an eagle in the opening credits? I don’t believe any of the show’s character’s names are chosen at random. All their names mean/signify something. Whether the eagle symbolizes Arnold though , I cannot say yet. What do you think?

  5. "How far can we push technology, before it starts pushing back?" – Call of Duty: Black Ops 3

It's interesting seeing that humanity has created this "technology" in the form of the host, turned them into slaves, and now they are "pushing back" against their creators in a way that shows them that they are no different than their creations. The intro to Season 3 seems to match this perspective as well.

  6. Nope. It is not the hosts flying too close to the sun but humans trying to play god and create a single path of existence for humanity.

  7. The eagle flying into the sun is an iris right before it’s a sun but after it’s a jet engine. At 7:56 ish the lights on th building reflecting upon the water create the shape of an eye. There have been extreme close ups of irises in other opening sequences as well.

  8. At 6:25, I think it closely resembles the “diamond ring” in an ultrasound around 6 or so weeks of gestation. Perhaps hinting that they still have’t met their creator.

  9. The Dandelion seeds could be a reference to a famous Alan Watts lecture. You could see the seed as a form of passive intelligence that uses the wind to achieve its goal. The super computer could be seen as the wind moving the humans around.

  10. The outline of the jet engine flame before it fully lights up also looks like that data sequence tracking anomalies for Rehoboam — maybe alluding to Delores' fight for control with Rehoboam? (2:56)

  11. Daedalus flew straight from the tower to the coast, but Icarus ignored his father’s instructions; flying was bliss. Icarus was overjoyed… until his wings melted and he plummeted to his death.

  12. It’s interesting that you took the opening credits as an exact opposite of how I interpreted it. The embryo at the beginning represents the beginning of a new life. Wether that is the plan of Delores to create a dominate host ruling class via the movie Future World or the breaking of technology and the established order is yet to be seen.

My interpretation of the Eagle is that it could be humankind and it simply cannot compete with technology. As much as it tries to compete it ends up destroying itself in the process.

The end part with the host being dipped into the vast of red could be a number of ideas. First off, it needs to be noted that the usual host who has a face was replaced with a host sentinel. A faceless host who simply follows and executed order. It dies not interact like a typical host, but instead, carries out tasks assigned by someone else. The red could represent the shedding of blood or it could also represent the immersion into evil (which red often represents) or a new world order. Red has been used a lot lately from Star Wars to other media to show a totalitarian society. The mindless host being submerged into an all controlling median could be foreshadowing of either humans or hosts.

Either way, thank you for the videos. Even though I don’t agree with your assessment on this subject, your input and analysis are always thought provoking!
