Honestly, the first time I learned about Artificial Intelligence, I was just thinking about all Hollywood movies. It’s probably your case: you might think of Terminator or some robots that wants to take over the world. In fact, AI has nothing to do with that (for the moment…). At the risk of oversimplifying, you can consider AI has a bunch of hidden algorithms that make the user-experience more pleasant. For example, Amazon is predicting the products that you might want to buy thanks to an AI System.
I always consider that there are 3 types of Artificial Intelligence:
1. The Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI)
2. The Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)
3. The Artificial Superintelligence (ASI)
An ANI or Weak AI is specialized in one area: it can do only one specific task like playing chess. For example, Deep Blue becomes in 1997 the first computer chess-playing program to beat the world chess champion Gary Kasparov. Deep Blue is an ANI because it can only play chess. We have successfully created this type of AI; the next step is the AGI.
An AGI is an AI that is as smart as humans and thus can perform any intellectual task that a human being can. Many experts are predicting that the first AGI will be created in 2040 or 2050… In my opinion, we’re yet to build an AGI (although some AI Companies like Google are making incredible progress).
Finally, the ASI or the Artificial Superintelligence. Nick Bostrom (a famous thinker and philosopher) defines it as: “an intellect that is much smarter than the best human brains in practically every field”.
