Is it possible that overfishing, super germs, and global warming are all caused by the same thing? In 1968, a man named Garrett Hardin sat down to write an essay about overpopulation. Within it, he discovered a pattern of human behavior that explains some of history’s biggest problems. Nicholas Amendolare describes the tragedy of the commons.

And this is one reason socialism doesn’t work. Tragedy of the commons is a huge reason why Private party and capitalism works.
So how do you fix this problem? One of the fishermen buys the pond. He sells the fish to the villagers and maintains it. It now becomes HIS self interest to make sure the pond remains self sufficient, so that he can profit. Nice topic but you failed to outline the important lesson here…. the only way to avoid a tragedy of the commons is to remove public goods altogether. Privatization is the only way we can achieve proper resource allocation. This includes clean air…. if you privatize air space, it can become unprofitable to pollute and companies will have to find alternatives for their production means. Everyone learn from this, please.
When you use overfishing to explain the problem that makes overfishing
So the real tragedy is withholding education from those who share the commons so they cannot understand long term effects of their actions. Ladys and gentlemen! I give you: the college loan crisis.
The same thing applies to things like traffic jams. A few people have their own self interest in moving forward but block traffic till eventually everyone else is forced to adopt the same strategy but this makes the traffic jam worse…
I think from a game theory perspective it shows how we should move away from individual optimal strategies to equilibrium strategies that are optimal for everyone, but also how fragile those equilibrium stratergies are given the greater short term incentives to deviate from whats optimal for everyone.
I did this experiment with my group of fishing scenario in my science class. And even after I tell them to take only two or else the fish population will collapse, THEY FRICK'IN TOOK ALL OF THE FISH IN THE FIRST ROUND and we are the first group to lose the challenge. I hate them.
Humanity's greatest ability is to observe its entirety from an individual, and act upon it.
The world has enough for everyone's need, but not for everyone's greed.
Solution: kill all humans
this video is just perfect! the theme is great and it is very well explained, the art is beautiful, everything!!!!
as they say
no man is an island
.
and that nature thrives by living for others so to serve the better good
the fruits of trees is not for themselves
rivers dont drink its own water
and even a flower's fragrance is not for itself
.
living for others and others for oneself has always been the most effective way to thrive
The Free Market can't solve everything!!! Governments are a Public Good!
cant you just catch two fish and then put them some wheare else
Capitalism is not the Answer.. it's THE PROBLEM.
?
“What’s good for all of us,
is good for each of us.”
I WRITE SINS NOT TRAGEDIES
The fish are so cute. Save the fish!
Sounds like communist PROPAGANDA to me
But in modern time, the resource of everything is quite limited, hence, there comes the competition, which will advance our human civilization, which, in turn, benefit those who in need. I know that sounds easy, but it is why it can be so easy to implement incorrectly, leading to irreversible consequence in the meantime.
Tragedy of the commons warns against collectivism and lack of private property rights not self intrest and capitalism. This speaker completely twists the meaning of tragedy of the commons.
Watch this, CHINA.
Meanwhile you realize that we are doomed cause of our own stupidity
Tragedy of the Commons is an anticapitalist thought experiment.
Thats why we should be communist…
More like Tragedy of The Commoners
DOH!
Tell that to jews :v
the tragedy of the commons would be absolutely demolished if we had a socialist or communist society instead of a capitalist one. thats facts
Thanos was right.
I'm not a tragedy 🙁
Question: Why didn't the fishermen share one fish or two fish per day? That way, they'd be able to maximize fish in the long term.
Beautiful animation.
The tragedy of the commons… but have you ever heard of the tragedy of darth plagueis the wise?
