What Makes a Data Scientist by Khan Muhammad Saqiful Alam

What makes a data scientist stand out? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just only crunching numbers.

First of all, the key to data science is passion. The daily life of a data scientist is quite unstructured and full of unknown challenges. But someone passionate in data science considers these as opportunities to grow!

Second, a knowledge of coding is required. I have seen many people shy away from coding, but these days the coding languages we use, R and Python, are very similar to English—and, all you need is a good understanding of logic. And, then, there is always Google!

In addition, knowledge of Statistics helps in learning and applying the truly fascinating models.

Last but not the least, is a unique skill – the ability to tell stories. Data is nothing but small lines and chapters [of] an interesting novel. A row of data tells us a story about an individual, about an event, about a year. The true gift of a data scientist is the ability to tell stories with the data. After all, if the insights [from data] are not relatable, how can we hope to make an impact?

I am Saqif, and I am [an] Analytics Advisor for Intelligent Machines. My role in the organization is twofold. First of all, I train the team on advanced tools and techniques in Predictive Modeling and Machine Learning. And, second, I help the team implement these models and techniques in the projects of Intelligent Machines.

My journey in the area of data started off with a TED Talk by Sebastian Wernicke — Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics. Frankly, I started watching the talk because of the name, but after a few seconds in it, I got completely hooked to the concept! Text can be data! What people talk can be data! And, not only can we see the patterns, but we can also understand the sentiments and the emotions behind the data! This made me so curious, that I started dedicating most of my free time to learn data science. The internet is full of tutorials and resources, but all you require is – grit. Even being a business graduate with no formal degrees in analytics, I have been able to learn my way to the point where I am right now.

I am a foodie, a gamer, and a strategy consultant. But, above all, I am a mentor—helping people in their journey to analytics. So if you ever need any help, please feel free to get in touch!
