The scientific word for “sound” is “phoneme”. Okay, now that that’s out of the way, which language has the most sounds or, rather, the most phonemes? In this video, I’m trying to find out!
Starting with English, I realized that determining how many sounds a language actually has is a daunting task between dialects and tonal languages and palatalization. Moving on to languages, I recently studied, I realized English’s sound inventory is pretty average. But what about languages with giant sound inventories? What about language with rare click consonants? Is it possible for a language to have 70, 80, or even 100 sounds? Watch and find out!
